Yang Finalist for UW Tobin Honor

Richard Yang, of Laramie, was among seven finalists for the 2017 Tobin Memorial Award as the University of Wyoming’s outstanding graduating man.

The annual award is based on academic excellence and achievement, service to the university, participation and leadership in the community and campus activities, and citizenship qualities.

Anthony Farmer, of Cheyenne, received the Tobin Award, while Sarah Maze, of Ranchester, was named the Rosemarie Martha Spitaleri Award recipient as the outstanding graduating woman during a recent ceremony honoring all the nominees.

Yang will graduate with degrees in computer engineering and computer science.

Yang says his time at UW has given him a valuable and enriching higher education experience that has allowed him to delve into new topics and expand his skills, especially conducting research in the computer technology field.

“I am grateful to be afforded these opportunities to provide leadership and service to the campus and the community, and to be involved in research and academic activities,” he says. ”This is an important chapter of my life and will make a significantly positive impact on my future.”

A nominator notes Yang’s dedication and academic success.

“He also was able to show a sincere dedication to the University of Wyoming through his various levels of participation and leadership,” the nominator says. “Richard is one who leads by example and is genuine in everything he does. Achievements aside, Richard’s greatest quality is his humbleness.”

Another nominator recognizes Yang’s outstanding interpersonal skills and unlimited potential.

“I also have noticed that Richard has a very good relationship with the other students in the class. He seems to be well-liked and respected by his peers,” the nominator adds. “Aside from being both a strong scholar and a researcher, Richard is a leader. Richard is an exceptional student, and I am certain he will go on to establish an exceptional research career as a computer scientist.”
