UW Receives High Marks for Energy Savings

August 28, 2017

The University of Wyoming has been recognized by Rocky Mountain Power for taking “some big steps in saving energy” and has been named the 2017 wattsmart Business Partner of the Year.

Last year, UW saved more than 752,771 kilowatt-hours, equivalent to the energy used by 85 homes in a year. In 2016, the university completed eight wattsmart business projects and received $80,368 in wattsmart incentives from Rocky Mountain Power, which helped with lighting, insulation, cooling and heating upgrades.

“The wattsmart program has helped us achieve our energy goals, which include reducing costs and consumption without sacrificing comfort,” says Frosty Selmer, UW’s deputy director of utilities management. “The incentives make more energy-saving projects economically viable, allowing UW to do more without increasing project funding.”

Since 2011, the university has completed 44 projects through Rocky Mountain Power’s wattsmart business energy efficiency program, which offers technical expertise and cash incentives for improving efficiency. Through new construction and retrofit projects, UW is saving more than 6.5 million kilowatt-hours.

“UW has taken an active role in saving energy while being mindful of the environment, and those efforts have yielded outstanding results,” says Cindy Crane, president and CEO of Rocky Mountain Power. “The university is a valuable partner of the wattsmart business program, and we applaud their great work.”
