Student Meeting on New Recreation and Tourism Degree at UW Oct. 12

October 5, 2018

Undeclared University of Wyoming students can learn about the new bachelor’s degree in outdoor recreation and tourism management at an informational lunch meeting Friday, Oct. 12.

The free lunch meeting will take place from noon-1 p.m. in Room 129 of the UW College of Business Building. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn how the degree may apply to their career and academic interests.

The UW Board of Trustees approved the degree program in March, and classes began this fall. The program is a collaborative effort between the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources and the College of Business.

Students in the program will gain an understanding of business, people and culture, environment and natural resources, and recreation and tourism in the classroom and outside, says Dan McCoy, the new degree program’s coordinator.

Graduates will be well prepared for jobs in Wyoming’s extensive tourism industry -- the state’s second largest economic sector -- as well as in government agencies involved in recreation, tourism and natural resource management.

“This degree program has been designed with job placement, and the growth and diversification of Wyoming’s recreation and tourism economy in mind,” McCoy says. “Industry and government employers have been consulted throughout every stage of degree development, and they will remain involved through guest lectures, student internships, and hosting of professional semester activities and projects.”
