UW College of Arts and Sciences Keith and Thyra Thomson Honors Convocation Oct. 19

Caitlin Long, McKenzee Peterson and Juan Vintimilla

The University of Wyoming College of Arts and Sciences will host its annual Keith and Thyra Thomson Honors Convocation Friday, Oct. 19, at 4 p.m. in the A&S auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Each year, the College of Arts and Sciences honors A&S students who have made the president’s, dean’s or freshman honor rolls during the past academic year. College of Arts and Sciences alumna Caitlin Long, from Laramie, is this year’s keynote speaker.

Student speakers are Juan Diego Vintimilla Cordoba, a senior in the departments of Psychology, and Modern and Classical Languages, from Cuenca-Azuay, Ecuador; and McKenzee Peterson, a senior in the departments of Geology and Geophysics, and Psychology, from Star Valley Ranch.

Long is a 22-year Wall Street veteran and an expert in bitcoin and blockchain technology. Active in bitcoin since 2012, Long helped drive Wyoming’s trailblazing 2018 blockchain legislation as a co-founder of the Wyoming Blockchain Coalition.

From 2016-18, she was chairman and president of Symbiont, an enterprise blockchain company. She ran Morgan Stanley’s pension business (2007-2016); held senior roles at Credit Suisse (1997-2007); and began her career at Salomon Brothers (1994-97).

At Morgan Stanley, Long advised on the settlement of nearly $40 billion of pension obligations for General Motors, Verizon, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Motorola, JC Penney and several other companies. At Credit Suisse, she helped place the initial public offerings of MetLife, Manulife, Prudential, Principal and John Hancock.

An active UW alumna, Long most recently chaired UW’s inaugural 2018 WyoHackathon for software developers. She previously served on the UW Foundation Board of Directors and the College of Arts and Sciences Board of Visitors.

An American weekly business magazine named Long among the top 10 business leaders changing the world through technology (2016); MarketsMedia, a content provider for all sectors of the securities industry through print, online and event platforms, gave her its 2016 Women in Finance Award for Excellence in Blockchain; and Institutional Investor, an online business publication, named her to its list of the most influential people in pensions (2013-15).

She is a graduate of Harvard Law School (J.D., 1994); the Kennedy School of Government (M.P.P., 1994); and UW (B.A., political economics, 1990).

This year’s College of Arts and Sciences student speakers both are UW McNair Scholars.

Vintimilla will discuss “The Role of Self-Compassion During Interactions in a Second Language,” and Peterson will present “The Mobility of Rare Earth Elements in Altered Sherman Granite, Laramie Range, and Southeast Wyoming.”

The convocation also presents an excerpt from UW Department of Theatre and Dance Professor Marsha Knight’s original multimedia dance-theater work, “Six Songs from Ellis.”

Based on oral histories of immigrants who came through Ellis Island between 1900-1954, “Six Songs” features several UW student performers. The Wyoming Jazz Ensemble will play pre- and post-convocation music.

In addition, McNair Scholars from the College of Arts and Sciences will display their research posters in the A&S lobby. Following the program, a cookie reception will be held in the A&S lobby.
