University of Wyoming Calendar for Feb. 18

These are among the activities scheduled Feb. 18-24 at the University of Wyoming:

Monday, Feb. 18, 3:10 p.m. -- The UW Department of Geology and Geophysics Distinguished Lecturer Series presents Shanan Peters, a professor in the Department of Geoscience at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He will discuss “Unsteady growth of the continental sedimentary reservoir: Implications for the Earth-life system” in the S.H. Knight Geology Building, Room 216. A reception will follow in the UW Geological Museum. Free.

Monday, Feb. 18, 6 p.m. -- Students for Life, a recognized student organization at UW, will screen “Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer” in the Classroom Building, Room 310. A discussion will follow the movie. Free.

Monday, Feb. 18, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music continues its Faculty Recital Series with Verismo Trio in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. Free.

Tuesday, Feb. 19, 7 p.m. -- Award-winning author Luis Alberto Urrea will visit UW to discuss his newest book, “The House of Broken Angels,” at the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center. Free.

Tuesday, Feb. 19, 7 p.m. -- UW Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium full-dome movie double feature: “Mayan Archaeoastronomy” and “From Earth to the Universe.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204, or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/physics/ and clicking on “Planetarium Schedule.”

Tuesday, Feb. 19, 8 p.m. -- Cowboy basketball vs. University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Arena-Auditorium. Ticket prices vary.

Wednesday, Feb. 20, 6 p.m. -- UW’s WWAMI Medical Student Association will offer a “Stop the Bleed” class in the UW College of Health Sciences Building, Room 459. “Stop the Bleed” is a national program designed to educate the public about life-saving bleeding control measures. Free.

Wednesday, Feb. 20, and Thursday, Feb. 21, 7 p.m. -- Outdoor adventure films will be screened during the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour in the UW College of Arts and Sciences auditorium. Free.

Thursday, Feb. 21, 1:10 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music will host its second Honors Convocation concert of the spring semester in the Performing Arts recital hall. The concert will feature woodwind, string and piano students with their collaborating pianists. Free.

Thursday, Feb. 21, 7 p.m. -- StudioWYO will host The Lonesome Heroes, an Austin, Texas-based band, and Whiskey Slaps, a Laramie band, in The Gardens, located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Thursday, Feb. 21, 7:30 p.m. -- The Danish String Quartet will perform as part of the UW Presents spring season in the Performing Arts concert hall. Tickets cost $15 for the public; $12 for UW faculty and staff members and senior citizens; and $10 for students. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

Friday, Feb. 22, 6-8 p.m. -- The UW Art Museum will host an opening reception to celebrate new exhibitions for the spring semester. Free.

Friday, Feb. 22, 7 p.m. -- UW Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium show, “Native American Skies.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204, or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/physics/ and clicking on “Planetarium Schedule.”

Saturday, Feb. 23, 9 a.m. -- February Service Saturday, sponsored by UW’s Service, Leadership and Community Engagement program, will be held outside Walmart and Safeway. Community members are invited to shop at the stores and make donations to go toward Interfaith-Good Samaritan.

Saturday, Feb. 23, 11 a.m. -- UW Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium show, “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Saturday, Feb. 23, 5:30 p.m. -- UW alumnus and 2007 world champion steer wrestler Jason Miller, of Lusk, is the guest speaker at the Bucking Horse Gala, a dinner and auction to raise money for the UW rodeo team. A silent auction and cocktail hour will be followed by dinner and a live auction. Tickets are $55 per individual and $500 to sponsor a table of seven. Tickets should be purchased by Feb. 15 and are available at http://uw.uwyo.edu/rodeodinner. The gala will take place at the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center.

Sunday, Feb. 24, 3 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music presents a saxophone recital by UW student Donicio Trujillo in the Performing Arts recital hall. Free.

Sunday, Feb. 24, 7 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music presents a trumpet recital by UW student Rosborg Halldorsdottir in the Performing Arts recital hall. Free.
