UW Theatre and Dance Presents Spring to Dance March 7

The University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance will present the one-act collaborative performance “Spring to Dance” Thursday, March 7-Saturday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m.

The performance, featuring original choreography by UW faculty members Jennifer Deckert, Neil Humphrey, André Megerdichian and Margaret Wilson, along with guest choreographer Jamie Johnson, will be on the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts main stage.

The program will feature three pieces choreographed by UW’s faculty members and one piece by Johnson.

The performance opens with a restaging of “A Choreographic Offering,” a 1964 work by modern dance pioneer José Limón. 

“Transiens” is a vertical dance piece choreographed and rigged by Wilson and Humphrey, in which photos of abandoned buildings and urban landscapes create an evolving and disparate environment for the dancers to explore.

"Courage,” a new work choreographed and premiered by Limón artist Jesse Obrenski during the 2018 Snowy Range Summer Dance Festival, will be presented at the American College Dance Association Northwest Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, later in March.

“In Fates’ Hands,” choreographed by Johnson, explores the three fates that had the power to determine humans’ destinies in ancient Greek mythology.

Megerdichian and Andrew Wheelock, UW assistant professor of percussion, will collaborate on “What Remains.” Both composer and choreographer found common ground in the passing of their mothers. The piece creates a dedication to those who have been lost to disease and those who love them.

The performance closes with “Frontiers,” created by Deckert, a spritely and endearing ode to the pioneering spirit of American heritage.
