University of Wyoming Calendar for April 1

These are among the activities scheduled April 1-7 at the University of Wyoming:

Monday, April 1, 3:10 p.m. -- The UW Department of Geology and Geophysics Distinguished Lecturer Series presents Kirsten Nicolaysen, an associate professor of geology at Whitman College. She will discuss “The Resilience of Prehistoric People to Volcanic Activity in the Islands of the Four Mountains, Alaska” in the S.H. Knight Geology Building, Room 216. A reception will follow in the UW Geological Museum. Free.

Tuesday, April 2, 7 p.m. -- UW Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium show, “This Month’s Sky.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204, or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/physics and clicking on “Planetarium Schedule.”

Wednesday, April 3, 4 p.m. -- Ursula Martin, a professor at the University of Oxford, will discuss “Ada Lovelace, 1815-1852: A Pioneering Computer Scientist in Her Social Context” in the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center auditorium. A reception will follow her talk. The College of Engineering and Applied Science and the departments of Mathematics and Statistics, and Computer Science host her talk. Free.

Wednesday, April 3, 8 p.m. -- The 7220 Entertainment Club Events Committee will host UW Stands Up, a stand-up comedy night, in The Gardens, located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Thursday, April 4, 10 a.m. -- The Criminal Justice Club will hold its annual job fair in the Wyoming Union Ballroom. Free.

Thursday, April 4, 7 p.m. -- The UW Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources’ Distinguished Speaker Series presents Robert Bonnie, former undersecretary for natural resources and the environment at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He will discuss “Beyond Confrontation and Regulation: Towards a New Conservation Paradigm.” His talk will be in the UW College of Business auditorium, with a reception to follow. Free.

Thursday, April 4, 7 p.m. -- StudioWYO hosts Casper band Speed the Pilgrim and Laramie indie rock group Wynona in The Gardens, located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Thursday, April 4, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music presents Bel Canto and Jazz Ensemble II in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall. Tickets cost $10 for the public, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for students. Thursday, April 4-Saturday, April 6, 7:30 p.m. -- UW Associated Students of the Performing Arts presents “A Feminine Ending” in the Performing Arts Studio Theatre. Friday, April 5, 1 p.m. -- The Association of Wyoming Student Makers hosts “The Joy of P(r)ainting” in the Coe Student Innovation Center. Community members are invited to check out the space and paint 3-D models. Free.

Friday, April 5, 4:10 p.m. -- The UW Department of Anthropology’s Spring 2019 Seminar Series presents Timothy Matney, a professor of anthropology at the University of Akron. He will discuss “Recent Developments in the Use of Shallow Subsurface Reflectance Spectroscopy to Characterize in situ Archaeological Features.” The talk will take place in the Berry Center auditorium. Free.

Friday, April 5, 5:30 p.m. -- The 7220 Entertainment Films Committee will screen M. Night Shyamalan’s “Unbreakable” trilogy in the Wyoming Union Family Room. “Unbreakable” will show at 5:30 p.m.; “Split” will be at 8 p.m.; and “Glass” will show at 10:30 p.m. Free.

Friday, April 5, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music’s Helios Trio will perform “The Music of Claude Debussy” in the Performing Arts recital hall. Free.

Friday, April 5, 8 p.m. -- UW Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium show, “Space, the Final Frontier.” The STAR Observatory on the rooftop of the Physical Sciences Building will be open to the public from 9-10 p.m. Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Saturday, April 6, 10 a.m. -- The UW Art Museum will host Family Saturday Workshop, an open studio, maker space-inspired workshop. Free.

Saturday, April 6, 6 p.m. -- The Mountain Women Belly Dance Club, a UW student organization, will host the Silk Road Showcase in the UW College of Education auditorium. The performance will include groups from Wyoming and northern Colorado. Free.

Sunday, April 7, 1 p.m. -- UW’s Exercise is Medicine On Campus presents “Walk with a Doc” in War Memorial Fieldhouse. Walk with a Doc is a national organization focused on encouraging healthy physical activity while reversing the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle. Free.
