Longtime University of Wyoming history Professor Phil Roberts has been selected to give UW’s 2019 Buchanan Lecture Friday, April 26.

Roberts, now professor emeritus of history and American studies, will discuss “14 Booms and 13 Busts: What We All Think We Know About Wyoming” at 1:30 p.m. in the Wyoming Union Center Ballroom. His talk is free and open to the public.

The lecture was established to honor Tom Buchanan, who retired in June 2013 after serving as UW’s 23rd president since 2005. The lecture is delivered annually by one of UW’s most accomplished retiring faculty members.

The lecture offers members of the university community the opportunity to hear distinguished UW faculty members distill a life of inquiry, reflection and service into important guidance for successive generations.

Roberts, a native of Lusk, was educated in public schools in Lusk, Torrington, Thermopolis, Worland and Cody. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he graduated from UW and the UW College of Law. He holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Washington.

In 1990, he joined the faculty in the UW Department of History, where he taught courses in Wyoming history; history of the American West; and public, legal and environmental history for 28 years. He has been active in history organizations statewide and regionally, and he served as editor of the history journal Annals of Wyoming.

The Office of Academic Affairs sponsors the Buchanan Lecture, selects the speaker and provides a monetary award. For more information, call the Office of Academic Affairs at (307) 766-4286.
