University of Wyoming Calendar for Sept. 2

These are among the activities scheduled Sept. 2-8 at the University of Wyoming:

Monday, Sept. 2 -- Most UW administrative offices will be closed for Labor Day.

Monday, Sept. 2, 6:30 p.m. -- Cowgirl volleyball vs. Long Island University Brooklyn, UniWyo Sports Complex. Ticket prices vary.

Tuesday, Sept. 3, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. -- The UW Wellness Center will host an open house. The center is located in the southwest corner of the Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center. Free.

Tuesday, Sept. 3, 5-7:30 p.m. -- The Wyoming Center on Aging, based at UW, will host Healthy U, a health workshop for people managing chronic pain and their friends, family and caregivers. The workshop will be in Ivinson Memorial Hospital’s Summit Room. There is no cost to attend, but space is limited. To register, call (307) 766-2765 or email dduhamel@uwyo.edu.

Tuesday, Sept. 3, 7 p.m. -- UW Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium show, “This Month’s Sky.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204, or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/physics and clicking on “Planetarium Schedule.”

Wednesday, Sept. 4 -- Fall semester classes begin.

Wednesday, Sept. 4, 12:10-12:50 p.m. -- The UW Art Museum will host “Lunchtime Conversations with Curators,” an informal gallery walk-through. Visiting artist Nikki Pike will discuss her work, “Is This Land Your Land,” in the entrance hall. Lunch will be provided following the walk-through. Free.

Wednesday, Sept. 4, 4 p.m. -- The UW Police Department (UWPD) will hold its annual found property auction at the UWPD north parking lot, located at 1426 E. Flint St. A viewing for items to be sold will start at 3 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 4, 5:30 p.m. -- Seven Iraqi scholars who have been at UW since July 1 will discuss “Navigating the challenges of post-conflict education in Iraq: the personal perspectives of seven Iraqi Fulbright scholars.” The presentation will be in the Classroom Building, Room 118. Free.

Thursday, Sept. 5, 6 p.m. -- Visiting artist Nikki Pike will discuss her process and production in the studio and on the street. Her talk will take place in the Visual Arts Building, Room 111. Free.

Thursday, Sept. 5, 7 p.m. -- StudioWYO hosts musical artists The Still Tide and MantisGrove in The Gardens, located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Friday, Sept. 6, 11:30 a.m. -- Cowgirl volleyball vs. University at Buffalo, UniWyo Sports Complex. Ticket prices vary.

Friday, Sept. 6, noon -- The UW School of Energy Resources Speaker Series presents James Sorensen, assistant director for subsurface strategies at the Energy and Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota. He will discuss “Overview of Two Enhanced Oil Recovery Pilots in the Bakken” in the Energy Innovation Center’s Encana Auditorium. Lunch will be provided. Free.

Friday, Sept. 6, noon -- The UW Department of History presents Michael Devine, a former UW history professor and American Heritage Center director. His talk, “A Korean War Retrospective: A Conflicted Legacy of Misunderstandings, Memories and Memorials,” will take place in the History Building, Room 155. Free.

Friday, Sept. 6, 3-8 p.m. -- The UW Art Museum will sponsor a live screenprinting demo at the Artist Village in downtown Laramie during the Pop-up Art Walk. Visiting artist Nikki Pike will print and give away a limited number of thrifted shirts and bags that read “Is This Land Your Land.” Participants are encouraged to bring a shirt or bag to be printed at the demo. Free.

Vaughan Planetarium show, “The Science of Science Fiction.” The STAR Observatory on the rooftop of the Physical Sciences Building will be open to the public for a “star party” from 8:30-9:30 p.m. Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Saturday, Sept. 7, 9 a.m. -- The UW Nordic ski team will host its annual “Trash 2 Treasures” fundraiser in the War Memorial Fieldhouse. A $5 early bird admission will be at 8 a.m.
