UW Women Take Sheridan College Rodeo Team Title

A hot start to the fall schedule continued for the University of Wyoming women’s rodeo team, as the Cowgirls dominated the Sheridan College rodeo last weekend.

The Cowgirls ran away with the team title to boost their overall Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR) lead after two weeks of action. The UW club scored a season-best 470 points on the strength of three of the four points team members scoring in all three women’s events.

Casper College was a distant second with 265 points, and Eastern Wyoming College was 300 points behind the Cowgirls in third place. As the defending regional champions, the Cowgirls have scored 793.33 points through the first two competitions of the fall season to lead the pack. Casper College is second with 573.33 points, and Gillette College sits third at 455.

Casey Reimler, an animal science graduate student, rebounded from a slow start to begin the season when she led the Cowgirls’ points team, scoring 215 points in two separate events. The Rozet student-athlete placed second in the breakaway roping average and added points in goat tying, taking fifth in the average.

Pre-pharmacy junior Taylour Latham continued to score points for the Cowgirls in two more events. The Roosevelt, Utah, transfer student was third in goat tying and fifth in the barrel racing average.

Another transfer student turned in the final points. Jacey Thompson, an organizational leadership junior from Yoder, placed in her second straight rodeo, finishing fourth in the goat tying average.

Other UW competitors, not on the four-member points team, also placed during the Sheridan rodeo.

Justene Hirsig, a business finance senior from Cheyenne, placed first in breakaway roping and sixth in barrel racing; Faith Hoffman, a kinesiology junior from Kiowa, Colo., was the goat tying runner-up; and Lakken Bice, a business marketing senior from Killdeer, N.D., and marketing junior Rachael Calvo, of Bassett, Neb., were third and fourth, respectively in the barrel racing average.

The UW men remained steady on the season, placing fourth as a team at the Sheridan College rodeo. The Cowboys tallied 295 points to finish behind Casper College, which won for the second consecutive weekend with 630 points. Chadron State College was second with 380 points, and Gillette College placed third with 345.

Casper College heads the region with 1,230 points through two of five fall rodeos, while Chadron State is second at 915. The Cowboys are third in the CRMR standings with 765 points.

For the first time this season, UW coach Beau Clark added a roughstock rider to the six-man points team, and the newcomer produced. Kemmerer freshman Donny Proffit’s two-ride performance in bareback riding earned him second in the average. He turned in the top score in the opening round and was third in the short go to place second overall, earning 150 team points.

The Pokes received points from three other team members. Transfer Houston Brown, a Miles City, Mont., animal science junior, scored in two events, placing third in the saddle bronc average and adding points in team roping. Caden Camp, an animal science sophomore from Belgrade, Mont., recorded the second fastest time in the opening round of tie down roping, but could not match it in the short go. The final points came from Austin Hurlburt, an agriculture education junior from Norfolk, Neb., in steer wrestling.

Several other UW Cowboys not on the points team also placed during the weekend rodeo. Agriculture business senior Seth Peterson, from Minot, N.D., had a huge rodeo, winning two different events. He won the tie down roping and steer wrestling events. Teammate Jase Staudt, of Nathrop, Colo., was second to Peterson in tie down roping. Peterson also was second in team roping with teammate Dusty Taylor, a finance senior from Craig, Colo., and won the all-around title.

Others placing were: Chase Berger, a rangeland ecology and watershed management senior from Saratoga, third in steer wrestling; Chase Rose, a rangeland ecology and watershed management junior from Lincoln, Calif., third in bareback riding; and Staudt and partner Bryan Lemmon from Casper College, sixth in team roping.

Central Wyoming College hosts this weekend’s regional rodeo in Riverton.
