UW Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band to Present Poetry in Sound Feb. 13

The University of Wyoming Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band open the concert spring season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

The performance will feature “Poetry in Sound,” a band repertory conducted by Professor Robert Belser and Assistant Lecturer Joseph Carver, both in UW’s Department of Music.

Tickets cost $10 for the public, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

The concert will open with Tim Mahr’s “Fantasia in G,” which uses the melody Beethoven made famous in his 9th Symphony, “Ode to Joy.” The performance will continue with Frank Ticheli’s work, “The Tyger,” based on the William Blake poem of the same name. Also featured will be “One Life Beautiful,” a poetic tribute by noted TV and film composer Julie Giroux. The concert will close with a collection of Russian folk tunes, titled “Folk Dances.”

For more information, call Kathy Kirkaldie, UW Fine Arts coordinator, at (307) 766-2160 or email kirisk@uwyo.edu.
