UW Among Sponsors of Varsity Blues College Admissions Cheating Scandal Virtual Program

The University of Wyoming College of Business is among four Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative collegiate programs hosting a virtual presentation that details “Operation Varsity Blues,” the seminal case widely known as the college admissions scandal.

Exploring one of the largest white-collar crime prosecutions in U.S. history, the virtual program is from noon-2 p.m. Tuesday, March 9. The panelists will discuss ramifications of the admissions scandal in higher education and fraud prevention, along with general ethics concepts in the admissions field.

Shelley Dodd, UW director of admissions, is among the presenters. Others include Eric Rosen, the lead prosecutor in the widely covered admissions scandal.

The scandal erupted in March 2019 when federal prosecutors charged 50 wealthy celebrities, business moguls and other powerful parents -- as well as various coaches, administrators and facilitators -- with participating in a scheme to bribe and cheat their children’s way into certain elite colleges across the United States. All used the services of Rick Singer, a well-known college counselor who profited from his network of corrupt test-takers and proctors, coaches and admissions personnel.

University of Colorado (CU) Law School Professor Melanie Kay will lead the discussion with Rosen, followed by a moderated panel discussion that will feature Dodd; Jillian Keegan, senior associate athletics director for compliance at CU-Boulder; and Linda Miller, fraud risk management expert and deputy executive director of the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee. Kent Noble, UW’s Bill Daniels Chair of Business Ethics, will moderate the panel discussion.
