UW, Partners to Discuss Improving State of Social Media

The University of Wyoming College of Business is among 12 Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative Collegiate Program consortium schools hosting a screening of the popular Netflix docudrama “The Social Dilemma” at 7 p.m. Monday, March 29.

A virtual panel -- that ties into the documentary’s screening -- will feature three experts focused on improving the state of social media. They will discuss “Beyond the Social Dilemma: Creating a More Ethical Social Media Future” from noon-2 p.m. Tuesday, March 30. Both the documentary and panel discussion events are free and open to the public. To register, go here.

David Ryan Polgar, a pioneering tech ethicist, founder of All Tech Is Human, and a member of TikTok’s Content Advisory Council, is the panel’s moderator. Panelists are Dipayan Ghosh, co-director of the Digital Platforms & Democracy Project at the Harvard Kennedy School and author of “Terms of Disservice”; and Safiya Noble, an associate professor at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA), author of the bestselling book “Algorithms of Oppression,” and co-director of the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry.

“If you haven’t seen the Netflix film ‘The Social Dilemma,’ I recommend you and your family do so,” says Kent Noble, UW’s Bill Daniels Chair of Business Ethics. “Hearing directly from some of the people who pioneered technologies that influence the way we think and act is sobering. At a minimum, the film and our panel of experts will give you a lot to think about.”

Other sponsors of the event are the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative Collegiate Program consortium schools at Colorado Mesa University, Colorado State University, New Mexico State University, University of Colorado-Boulder, University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, University of Colorado-Denver, University of Colorado Law School, University of Denver, University of New Mexico, University of Northern Colorado and University of Utah.
