UW MBA Students Receive Awards

Kristine Fink, Aaron Moody, Thomas Pointon and Corey Strom

Four University of Wyoming Master of Business Administration (MBA) students and two College of Business faculty members recently received year-end program awards.

“Honoring the outstanding work of our students and faculty each year is something I always look forward to,” says Ben Cook, MBA Program director. “Simultaneously, these awards allow us to highlight our values as a program. Leadership, ethics, high performance and impactful teaching are at the core of our mission to prepare future business leaders.”

Receiving student-nominated awards were:

-- Kristine Fink, from Scarsdale, N.Y., a first-year master’s degree/MBA student, the Student Leadership Award in recognition of leadership, mentorship and service contributions to his/her cohort and the MBA Program. As part of the nomination, the recipient also serves as a student liaison for the UW College of Business Advisory Board.

-- Thomas Pointon, from Laramie, a first-year master’s degree/MBA student, the Bill Daniels Ethics Award in recognition of consistently demonstrating honesty, integrity and ethical behavior.

Faculty-nominated award winners were:

-- Aaron Moody, of Rapid City, S.D., a second-year energy management MBA spring semester graduating student, the Outstanding Campus MBA Student Award.

-- Cortlan (Corey) Strom, from Fridley, Minn., summer graduating student, the Outstanding Online MBA Student Award.

Receiving MBA faculty awards, nominated by students, were:

-- Management and marketing Associate Professor Andrew Arnette, the Online MBA Teaching Excellence Award for recognition of outstanding teaching in the online MBA program. He teaches courses in data and decision modeling, and is in his fourth year teaching in the online MBA program.

-- Accounting and finance Assistant Professor Kenneth Zheng, the Campus MBA Teaching Excellence Award for recognition of outstanding teaching in the campus MBA program. He teaches courses in managerial accounting and is in his sixth year teaching in the campus MBA program.

The full-time campus and online MBA programs are demanding commitments, Cook says. The online students put in 15 hours each week on top of their full-time jobs. The on-campus students take 16 credits each semester rather than the standard graduate load of nine credits.

“This level of effort from all MBA students elevates what a special achievement earning one of these awards is,” Cook adds. “Kristine and Thomas were nominated by their peers for their demonstrations of leadership and ethics; Aaron and Cortlan were nominated by the faculty for their standout performance; and Dr. Arnette and Dr. Zheng were nominated by students from feedback on their courses.”
