Art of Hybridization Workshop, Art Show Scheduled at UW

A hybridization workshop and art show are scheduled later this week at the University of Wyoming.

The “Art of Hybridization Journaling Workshop,” led by Lander-based artist Rosie Ratigan, is from noon-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, in UW’s Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center.

The class will cover the basics of how journaling is used by artists and scientists, as well as information on ways to keep a personal journal. The workshop is open to both new and experienced journalers.

Cost is $40 per person, with scholarships available. Materials provided at the workshop include a journal, micron pen, watercolor pencil set and brush.

The workshop is being offered in conjunction with the Art of Hybridization art show, also at the Berry Center. The Art of Hybridization exhibition is now on display through October. An art show reception is from 6-7:30 Friday, Aug. 27. A variety of art and science activities and tours of the Museum of Vertebrates will be offered during the reception.

The Art of Hybridization project is a collaborative project involving Ratigan; Wommack, the Berry Center’s staff curator; UW doctoral student Paul Dougherty, from Dover, Maine; and UW Associate Professor Matt Carling.

Funded by a UW Biodiversity Institute novel outreach grant, the project explores new ways to communicate the power and importance of hybridization and speciation by using several groups of Wyoming bird species that hybridize in the Great Plains of North America.

Participants will learn about three unique hybridizing groups of birds and how the UW Museum of Vertebrates is using them to understand avian evolution.
