UW Psychology Center Has New Name, Offers More Services

The Psychology Center for Training in Assessment, Treatment and Clinical Research at the University of Wyoming has expanded its services to assist more UW students and community members.

The center, formerly the Psychology Clinic, will have three new faculty members starting this fall to increase service capacity for those with mental health needs, says Cynthia Hartung, the Psychology Center director and a UW Department of Psychology professor. Anne Stevens, a clinical assistant professor, will see clients and supervise graduate student therapists in the Psychology Center. Christina McDonnell and Kasey Stanton, both assistant professors, also will supervise graduate student therapists.

The Psychology Center, located in Room 307 of the Biological Sciences Building, provides affordable, evidence-based mental health care. It is a training center for the clinical psychology doctoral program. UW graduate student therapists -- supervised by UW psychology faculty members who are licensed clinical psychologists -- will conduct all assessments and treatment at the center. Services also are offered via telehealth for children and adults throughout Wyoming.

Training is focused on empirically based techniques shown to produce symptom reduction and improved client functioning. Current faculty specialize in the assessment and treatment of anxiety; depression; alcohol and substance use; trauma-related difficulties; suicide and self-injury; eating and sleep disorders; adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder; childhood disorders; serious mental illness; chronic health issues; and relationship dysfunction.

Stevens, McDonnell and Stanton bring new specialties, including childhood trauma, autism spectrum disorders and personality disorders, Hartung says. The Psychology Center fills a need in the community for reduced-cost specialty services that are otherwise unavailable or unaffordable.

“These services are for those with greater levels of impairment that often require more specialized and intensive intervention,” Hartung adds. “Not all problems are appropriate for our training center, and some cases may be referred elsewhere for services.”
