Directed by UW Department of Theatre and Dance Assistant Professor Matthew Greenberg and Landee Lockhart, an assistant lecturer, this adaptation of “Antigone” asks “What does it mean to be visible, and who is allowed to be most visible and why?”

Set at the base of the Snowy Range in 1969 -- against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, women’s rights, civil rights and the protest era -- the play follows Antigone as she wrestles with whether to follow the law of the land or to do what she knows to be right.

When Antigone breaks the law by burying her brother, Polynices, who has been killed in battle -- and against King Creon’s decree -- everyone must face the consequences. Themes of power, fate, rule-of-law, autonomy, feminism and equality arise in the quest for truth, love and justice, and invite the audience to consider how to justify actions in pursuit of equality today.

The UW production of “Antigone” is based on French playwright Jean Anouilh’s 1944 play which, in turn, was inspired by ancient Greek playwright Sophocles’ work and the accompanying myth. The tragedy originally played in Nazi-occupied France and was translated into English in 2015 by Robertson Dean.

“We hope by looking back at our history, we can learn from Antigone’s plight,” the directors say.

A talkback session will follow the Thursday, Oct. 20, performance, and will feature Peter Parolin, dean of UW’s Honors College; French Associate Professor Khama-Bassili Tolo; classical civilizations Senior Lecturer Laura De Lozier; directors Lockhart and Greenberg; and costume designer Jenny Foldenauer.
