UW to Host National Workshop on Faculty

The University of Wyoming will welcome over 50 faculty members and administrators from colleges and universities across the United States for a one-day national workshop, “Developing More Impactful Experiential Learning: Best Practices for Faculty-led Study Abroad,” Friday, Oct. 7, at the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center.

The workshop is funded by a U.S. State Department grant secured through UW’s Global Engagement Office by Nevin Aiken, an associate professor in UW’s School of Politics, Public Affairs and International Studies and Academic Affairs Faculty Fellow for Global Engagement, and Shelley Jewell, director of UW Education Abroad.

The selection of UW to host this workshop highlights the university’s commitment to internationalization and leadership as a nationally recognized center of excellence for international experiential learning and innovative faculty-led study-abroad programming.

The workshop will include concurrent interactive sessions led by UW faculty and staff members, and speakers from other regional institutions on topics such as expanding and diversifying faculty-led study-abroad programs for first-year students; students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics; and other traditionally underrepresented student populations. Other topics include increasing cultural competencies for diverse student populations in faculty-led study-abroad programs and mental health resourcing strategies for students and program leaders.

The event also will include representatives of the State Department and World Learning, a global development and exchange organization delivering education programs in more than 150 countries.

Workshop activities will be limited to registered participants. However, members of the UW community interested in faculty-led study-abroad programs are invited to join the open welcome session and keynote address from 8:45-10:30 a.m.

Since 2016, the IDEAS Program has awarded 145 grants to 139 institutions in 48 states and territories to create, expand and diversify their U.S. study-abroad programs in 71 countries across all world regions.
