UW-Led Conference on Support for Dementia Caregivers in Casper Nov. 30

Experts on dementia care from throughout the region will meet in Casper for the first “Strengthening Wyoming’s Dementia Community” conference Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Casper College, located at 125 College Drive.

The Wyoming Center on Aging (WyCOA) at the University of Wyoming, Casper College, Wyoming Dementia Care and Home Instead sponsor the conference.

The free educational and networking event will take place from 8:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m. in Room 225 of the Walter H. Nolte Gateway Center. Even though the event is free, participants are urged to register online by going to www.uwyo.edu/wycoa.

The conference is designed to help family caregivers of those living with dementia. Speakers will include experts in the fields of dementia care, physical and occupational therapy, social work and caregiver support.

“We are grateful to offer this help and support to these dedicated caregivers who often set aside many aspects of their own lives to care for their loved ones,” says Sabine Schenck, a senior project coordinator with WyCOA. “They are dealing with incredibly difficult circumstances every day, and this conference is designed to offer them hope -- and some practical caregiving tips -- as they navigate their journeys. We hope that this event can be held annually to continue to provide this support.”

Schenck says that conference sessions will include “How to Talk to Your Doctor: Advocating for Your Loved One” and “Support with Personal Care and Hygiene.” Additionally, the benefits of novel approaches using music interventions will be discussed.

Free respite care will be provided from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.

“We know it is often difficult to attend any outside activities when you are a full-time caregiver,” Schenck says. “This on-site respite care will provide fun, safe activities and snacks for the person living with dementia while the caregiver attends the sessions. All we ask is that the caregiver RSVP so that we know how many to expect.”

For more information about the conference, call (307) 766-2829 or email wycoa@uwyo.edu.

Those who cannot attend in person can still participate by joining virtually on Zoom. Login information will be provided at registration. Casper College’s Occupational Therapy Assistant Club will provide technical support.
