SK Kakraba, a renowned virtuoso on the Ghanaian gyil, a wooden xylophone, will perform with the University of Wyoming Percussion Ensemble Friday, Dec. 2.

The ensemble, conducted by Andrew Wheelock, an assistant professor in the UW Department of Music, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

All tickets are $5. To purchase tickets, visit the Performing Arts box office, call (307) 766-6666 or go online at www.tix.com/ticket-sales/uwyo/6984.

Hailed by LA Weekly as the “world’s greatest xylophone player,” Kakraba descends from a long line of gyil masters and makers who have traditionally played sacred music reserved for funerals and religious observances. The gyil is the primary instrument of the Lobi and Dagarti people of Ghana, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire.

The concert also will feature multi-instrumentalist Greg Harris, a freelance musician and music educator in the Denver and Boulder areas who has performed nationally and internationally. Harris leads the Greg Harris Vibe Quintet, and he is a member of bluegrass legend Pete Wernick’s Flexigrass; hip-hop/jazz/soul group Future Jazz Project; New World Citizen Band; Ninth & Lincoln Orchestra; and SuperCollider.

For more information, call Kathy Kirkaldie, UW Fine Arts coordinator, at (307) 766-2160 or email kirisk@uwyo.edu.
