Orlando Cela and Chi-Chen Wu with their musical instrumentsGuest artist and flutist Orlando Cela will be at the University of Wyoming Department of Music for a two-day residency Thursday and Friday, Feb. 23-24.

Cela will present a talk titled “Career Paths for Musicians” Feb. 23, followed by a duo recital with UW Department of Music faculty member Chi-Chen Wu Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital Hall.

The duo’s free public recital will feature works by Johann Sebastian Bach, George Enescu, UW music Professor Anne Guzzo, Krzysztof Penderecki and Sergei Prokofiev.

Known for his compelling renditions using imaginative programming, Cela has premiered more than 200 works, both as a flutist and as a conductor, to rave reviews from the media. In concert, Cela regularly offers short, lively introductions to selected works, providing audiences with entry points into unfamiliar works so that listeners can easily connect the music with other life experiences.

As a flutist, Cela has performed nationally and internationally at the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.; the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Mass.; the Center for New Music and Technologies at the University of California-Berkeley; the Zentrum Danziger in Berlin, Germany; the Espace des femmes in Paris, France; and the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria.

As a collaborative artist, Cela has performed with renowned artists worldwide, and he recently was a finalist in The American Prize in the professional instrumentalist division. Cela serves as the music director of the Arlington Philharmonic Orchestra and the Lowell Chamber Orchestra.

He is a music educator and currently serves as an assistant professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass., where he teaches conducting; and at Middlesex Community College (MCC), where he teaches a variety of music courses and is the coordinator of the MCC Music Outreach Program.

As a musician active in performing, recording, teaching and research, Wu is equally at home in the worlds of contemporary and classical music as well as historical performance practice. Recently making her Carnegie Hall debut with the Helios Trio, Wu also has appeared as a recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist in the United States, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Luxembourg, Japan, Taiwan, China and Thailand.

She has performed at numerous festivals, and her live performances have been broadcast on National Public Radio’s Simply Grand Concert Series and “From The Top.”
