Isadora Helfgott, the University of Wyoming’s vice provost for global engagement, has been selected to participate as a fellow in the U.S.-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) University Connections Initiative (UCI).

UCI is a White House initiative announced during the U.S.-ASEAN Special Summit in May 2022. It is administered through the U.S. Department of State’s Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students (IDEAS) Program, which builds U.S. colleges and universities’ capacity to engage in global partnerships and study-abroad programming aligned with U.S. foreign policy goals.

The initiative will bring together 50 leaders from diverse colleges and universities in the United States and eight ASEAN member countries -- Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam -- for a series of virtual and in-person trainings designed to foster sustainable international academic partnerships and the two-way exchange of students, scholars and researchers between U.S. and Southeast Asian higher education institutions.

“I’m thrilled to receive this fellowship because it’s an opportunity for me to engage on behalf of UW with colleagues from ASEAN region higher education institutions as well as colleagues from U.S. universities who are actively seeking to increase engagement with the ASEAN region,” Helfgott says. “It’s a unique chance for me to learn how I can help create opportunities for UW faculty and students in the area -- whether we’re talking about new study-abroad courses, new research collaborations, bringing new groups of students into UW or developing joint grant proposals.”

The initiative will give UW exposure to a broad range of potential partners in the ASEAN region, Helfgott says.

“Not a lot of universities in these countries know about Wyoming and our university’s unique strengths and areas of excellence,” she says. “The initiative should create opportunities for outbound student and faculty mobility. I also hope we will be able to increase awareness about UW in these regions that will bring great international students into our degree programs.”

UCI is being implemented in partnership with the Association of International Education Administrators.
