UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

UW graduate and National Geographic photographer Joe Riis and UW researchers’ Wyoming Migration Initiative involvement was cited in a New York Times article. The focus was on Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke directing agencies in his department to work with states and private landowners to minimize development and disturbance in migration corridors and winter ranges used by elk, mule deer and pronghorn antelope.

National Public Radio reported that energy analysts agree the reasons for nearly 1,000 more coal jobs added nationwide last year are short-term and have nothing to do with White House policies. UW economist Rob Godby said production was up, but mines are doing more with fewer workers.

A new analysis of DNA from the skeletal remains of ancient people in southeastern Europe has revealed new insight on prehistoric migration patterns, according to UW researchers. The work of UW scientists and their colleagues was published in London’s Daily Mail, Archaeology News Network and a leading archaeology publication. To read UW’s release, click here.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed UW economist Chuck Mason, who commented on proposed Wyoming legislation that would cut the severance tax rate in half for petroleum and natural gas companies for a certain period of time.

UW scientists were featured in a Wyoming PBS “Wyoming Main Street” program detailing excavation work being conducted at the Natural Trap Cave in the Bighorn Mountains. Artifacts found in the cave are being housed in the UW Geological Museum.

Wired Magazine interviewed UW Assistant Professor Jeff French for an article, titled “Could Scientists Use Silver Iodide to Make Snow for the Olympics?” French said silver iodide has a molecular structure that’s similar to ice.

Jane Zelikova, a UW botany postdoctoral research associate, is receiving good reviews for her film, “The End of Snow,” that focuses on the effects of dust deposition in mountainous regions and the disappearance of Colorado snowpack, according to Colorado’s 303 Magazine. Zelikova is an ecologist who studies climate change.

The Laramie Boomerang reported that the UW Board of Trustees recently approved a nearly $400,000 proposal for the Wyoming Early Childhood Outreach Network that could improve access to and quality of preschool education in the state. U.S. News and World Report also published the article.

UW officials announced last week that enrollment for the spring semester is up by nearly 1 percent on the Laramie campus, thanks largely to a large freshman class and transfer students, according to Laramie Live. The Washington Times also reprinted the article.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reprinted The New York Times’ interview with Matt Kauffman, director of the Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at UW. The article focused on concerns of biologists about the future of migration patterns -- including antelope in western Wyoming.

Several agencies are discussing projects in an attempt to reduce car-animal crashes in the state, noted Wyoming Business Report. A UW deer/elk collaring research program was mentioned in the article.

Sports Techie noted a foam lining to reduce football concussions, created by UW mechanical engineering department head Carl Frick and a colleague, recently won the 1st and Future “Advancements in Protective Technology” award during Super Bowl week.

A recent study by Kevin Monteith, an assistant professor at UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, indicates that nutrition and mother’s health are more important to growing large bighorn sheep than genetics, noted The CS-T.

The Boomerang reported that four new fraternities could be added by 2022, according to UW fraternity and sorority Coordinator Erik Kahl. The university hopes to attract other and more diverse Greek organizations in coming years.

Aimee Lewis, a UW School of Pharmacy pharmacist and co-chair of the Wyoming Prescription Abuse Stakeholders, told The Sheridan Press that opioid addiction in Wyoming may not be as apparent as it is in other states but, it is still a problem.

Sheridan Media reported that the documentary “Apache Warrior,” featuring UW graduate Ret. Lt. Col. Kevin Christensen, from Casper, will be screened next month at UW.

Chris Boswell, UW vice president for governmental and community affairs, was profiled by The Boomerang. Boswell is retiring at the end of the current legislative session.

Sheridan Media reported that the Daniels Fund recently provided grant funding to UW for ethics education through its Ethics Initiative.

Two consultants were at UW last week to gather perspectives on the future of public art on campus, reported The Boomerang. KOWB Radio also had a similar story.

Sheridan Media reprinted UW’s release announcing a DACA Symposium last weekend at the UW Conference Center. Wyoming Public Radio also reported on the symposium.

UW junior Clara Tapia, from Spain, was named Academic All-District VII Women’s Basketball First Team, which qualifies her for the Academic All-America Team, reported The CS-T.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release on the Wyoming Atlas Project that recently launched a digital version for Wyoming’s K-12 schools.

Mark Jenkins, a field staff writer for National Geographic and a UW School of Politics, Public Affairs and International Studies lecturer, will present his latest talk this week on campus, reported The Boomerang.

The Akron Beacon Journal noted that former UW basketball standout Larry Nance Jr., now with the Cleveland Cavaliers, finally made his debut in front of his family. Nance Jr. is originally from Ohio.

Toshiba noted that Nance Jr. will switch his jersey number to 22 to honor his father, Larry Nance Sr., who was a standout player in his own right for the Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers. undefined

The Boomerang profiled UW graduate Even Brande, owner of Handel Information Technologies in Laramie, who came from Oslo, Norway, to ski for the Cowboys. Brande will return to his home country to compete in the 54-kilometer, two-mountain pass ski race known as the Birkebeiner.undefined
