State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Los Angeles Times interviewed UW Associate Professor Melissa Murphy, who commented about anthropologists’ discovery of a mass ritual killing that involved the deaths of more than 140 children in 1450 Peru. Murphy, who was not involved in the research, said the sheer size of this event and the fatal wounds set it apart from other discoveries.

A new report by UW economists Rob Godby and Ben Cook, of the Center for Energy Economics and Public Policy, analyzes the impact of tax policies on wind farm development in the West, according to The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T).

UW’s release announcing that “The World Needs More Cowboys” campaign video is the best single-spot television ad among all national higher education advertising in the past year was published by The CS-T, Oil City News and County 10. The video earned a “Best of Show” honor in the 34th annual Educational Advertising Awards competition, sponsored by Higher Education Marketing Report.

The marketing campaign was the topic of a Wall Street Journal editorial.

The Laramie Boomerang reported that the permanent site for new UW residence halls probably will not be decided until next January, according to Sean Blackburn, UW vice president for student affairs.

UW economist Jason Shogren’s comments related to the Wyoming Legislature’s bill that aims to save failing coal mines in the state were picked up on an MSNBC segment, titled “Climate change is not one issue.”

106.3 Cowboy Country radio in Cheyenne reported that Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers Band released a new video for “The World Needs More Cowboys.” The song is inspired by UW’s national-winning marketing slogan of the same name. Williams is a UW graduate and former rodeo team member from Moorcroft.

UW alumna Caitlin Long wrote a piece for Forbes about Wyoming’s new laws regarding blockchain.

Bio Portfolio and Bioengineer published UW’s release on a study of the rare Wyoming desert yellowhead plant found on Beaver Rim in Fremont County.

The Wyoming Latina Youth Conference, which is housed within the UW Latina/o Studies Program, was featured as part of the Women in Wyoming project as part of the International Women’s Day. Photographs were taken by former Powell resident Lindsey Linton.

The Laramie Boomerang reported that the UW Board of Trustees is now considering purchasing some of the Pilot Hill property east of Laramie.

UW President Laurie Nichols said the Legislature’s approval of the university’s supplemental budget request includes a 2 percent across-the-board raise for employees, The Boomerang noted.

Sheridan Media published the following UW releases: Coletan Nutter being named UW’s first Coverdell Fellow; UW will host the Symposium on Transformative Education in Prison and Beyond later this month; and UW Professor Holly Ernest’s study about genetic outcomes of translocation of bighorn sheep in Arizona.

Science Daily and Phys.Org also picked up UW’s press release on Ernest’s bighorn sheep study.

Fourteen UW theater and dance students competed and received awards during the Region VII Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, according to Wyoming Public Radio.

The Boomerang reported that UW’s Engineering Education and Research Building should be completed this month, with most equipment expected to be moved in by the start of summer session.

Bridger-Teton National Forest officials used tracking data from mule deer, outfitted with GPS collars by UW researchers, to help determine where new all-terrain vehicle trails should go, according to The Jackson Hole News and Guide.

The CS-T previewed the six finalists for the annual Dorothy Jacoby Concerto Competition, which features UW’s top music students, as well as the UW Department of Theatre and Dance’s production of “What Remains.” Wyoming Public Radio featured the production.

Funding for UW’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources will be a top priority for legislators next session, a lawmaker told The CS-T.

Sweetwater NOW noted that several local students were among 101 students statewide to receive the 2019 Trustees’ Scholars Award, UW’s top academic scholarship.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed Elizabeth Wommack, UW Museum of Vertebrates curator and collections manager, about a California condor that traveled to Wyoming last year but died shortly thereafter. The body was given to the museum for research and education.

UW’s Nordic ski teams were mentioned in The Jackson Hole News and Guide’s preview of the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association National Championships on Snow King Mountain.
