State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW President Laurie Nichols, in an Inside Higher Ed article about states allowing two-year colleges to offer four-year bachelor’s degrees, said Wyoming can learn from surrounding states that have created too many four-year colleges -- also on spare populations -- that struggle to support them. UW also is mentioned in another Inside Higher Ed piece, titled “Who Owns the Bachelor’s Degree?”

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) interviewed UW economist Rob Godby, who agrees with Moody’s Investor Service, a credit rating agency, that Wyoming’s Powder River Basin coal production faces a bleak future. Coal Zoom also quoted Godby on the impending bankruptcy of Cloud Peak Energy.

Judy Shepard, the mother of Matthew Shepard and co-founder of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, and former Wyoming state superintendent Judy Catchpole will be awarded honorary UW doctoral degrees next month, reported The CS-T.

Huff Post interviewed UW Associate Professor Susan Dewey, who commented on a Florida bill on human trafficking that would require anyone guilty of soliciting sex from sex workers to be added to a public registry.

UW researchers are a step closer to knowing what potential there is for commercial carbon dioxide storage under the Powder River Basin with drilling of a 10,200-foot-deep test well near the Dry Fork Station power plant about 10 miles north of Gillette, noted The Gillette News Record.

Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies noted that Jane Zelikova, a UW botany research scientist, delivered a closing keynote address, titled “Living at the Intersection of Climate Science and Action,” at the school’s research conference last weekend.

An area that has been a focal point for UW researchers searching for answers about a large migratory mule deer herd that has struggled to recover from drought and severe winters is among migratory routes in the path of energy development, according to The Jackson Hole News and Guide.

The Boomerang reported that UW’s calendar committee has proposed a longer break during Thanksgiving week, and the winter break cut back one week. If approved, the calendar would go into effect next fall.

UW first-generation students will be part of a panel discussion this week in Jackson to discuss with local residents their experiences on campus, reported The Jackson Hole News and Guide.

The Boomerang reported that UW administrators are working on a plan to, beginning in the 2020-21 academic year, increase need-based aid for Wyoming students while reducing discounts provided to out-of-state students.

UW computer scientists will be among trainers for school district personnel, thanks to a $95,000 coding science grant from Microsoft, reported The CS-T.
