UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Wyoming Public Media, The Laramie Boomerang and The Philadelphia Inquirer were among media outlets announcing that current UW Vice President for Finance and Administration Neil Theobald has been named acting president by the UW Board of Trustees. The Chronicle of Higher Education also noted the transition.

UW officials will seek nearly $50 million from the state Legislature for remodeling projects to Corbett Pool and the west side of War Memorial Stadium, according to The Gillette News Record.

Wyoming Public Media also covered UW’s annual Women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Conference, which took place May 21 on UW’s campus. Wyoming Public Media also interviewed Wyoming-born NASA flight operator Ivy McLeod, who was the Women in STEM Conference keynote speaker.

UW Professor Greg Brown told UW Trustees last week that an increase in funding is needed to realize the original goals set for the success of UW’s Science Initiative, reported The Gillette News Record.

SweetwaterNOW published UW’s release on the numerous activities sponsored last week by UW to note the 150th anniversary of explorer John Wesley Powell’s expedition down the Green and Colorado rivers.

Changes to alpine streams fed by glaciers and snowfields due to a warming climate threaten to alter the types of bacteria and other microbes in those streams, according to a UW media release published by Smart Water Magazine. Lusha Tronstad, research scientist with the Wyoming Natural Diversity Database, located at UW, was among researchers on the project, the article noted.

WyoFile interviewed Sam Kalen, UW College of Law associate dean, for an article focusing on whether the state should take over functions required by the federal National Environmental Policy Act and why that would be a bad idea.

UW’s successful marketing video “The World Needs More Cowboys” was featured on Casper’s 95.5 All Country radio station’s website.

>Cuban Art News profiled the UW Art Museum’s latest exhibition, “Pavel Acosta: Stolen from the Museum,” featuring the Cuban artist’s latest interpretations of classic artworks from Monet and John James Audubon. Acosta works with paint chips gathered from flaking walls.

Costly cancer lawsuits have spread shock among both farmers and researchers after Monsanto lost a recent case, Andrew Kniss, a UW plant sciences professor, said in a Science Magazine article. Monsanto is the leading manufacturer of glyphosate, the world’s most widely used herbicide that has been linked to causing cancer. Genetic Literacy Project republished the article on its website.

The Casper Star-Tribune noted that UW has restored a degree program in career and technical education. The program trains teachers in vocational education.

The UW Board of Trustees approved WyoVentures LLC, a business arm of the university, reported The Wyoming Tribune Eagle. The program will create and maintain an educational entrepreneurship resource infrastructure that will be an accessible point of entry for startup ventures in Wyoming.

Star Valley Independent reported that Barbara Rasco has been selected dean of the UW College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

UW signed an agreement with Clean Coal Technologies Inc. to develop a cleaner-burning coal in the Powder River Basin, reported Oil City News.

Sheridan Media interviewed Chad Baldwin, UW associate vice president for communications and marketing, about major and minor degrees in entrepreneurship being offered by UW this fall. He also discussed how UW is joining other institutions in upgrading their Doctor of Education programs through the Carnegie Project.

Excavation at the Hell Gap Paleoindian site, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2018, will resume this summer, according to The Guernsey Gazette. UW anthropology Professors Marcel Kornfeld and Mary Lou Larson are directors of the project.

County 10 published UW’s release announcing that the Wyoming Institute for Humanities Research selected recipients for its 2019-2020 cohort of faculty fellows, including a research project that will digitally document stories on the Wind River Indian Reservation.

UW Professor Jay Norton discussed with Wyoming Public Radio his soil carbon research that could be a possible solution to climate change.

The Sundance Times published guidelines provided by UW Extension on the proper cleaning techniques and safe practice habits of using kitchen cutting boards.

UW Extension held a Field Day at the Powell Research and Extension Center, reported The Cody Enterprise.

Wyoming Business Report published UW’s Business Tip press release that featured how Wyoming tourism-related businesses can use a new Google app called Trips.

A Cheyenne student was among the 16 finalists in the annual Fisher Innovation Launchpad student entrepreneurship program, sponsored by UW, reported The Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

The Tribune Eagle also noted that UW’s Ruckelshaus Institute is facilitating meetings for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department as part of an effort to gather public input as the department prepares to revise its chronic wasting disease management plan.

A project to introduce sunn hemp as an alternative to improve crop output by Carrie Eberle, a UW assistant professor of plant sciences, is among 13 projects awarded funds from UW’s Science Initiative Faculty Innovation Grants program. UW’s release was printed on Feed Stuffs website.

Bangor Daily News included quotes from UW Extension sheep specialist Whit Stewart, who offered tips on adding sheep to individual homesteads.

UW sheep specialists hosted a savory showdown for UW animal science students, who tested various lamb recipes for a year-end class project, reported The Star Herald, in Scottsbluff, Neb.
