UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW Professor Jeff Lockwood was quoted in Smithsonian.com, MSN Canada and Deseret News stories about the grasshopper infestation in Las Vegas.

Xinhua, a Chinese news agency, featured Qin Zhu, an associate professor in UW’s Division of Kinesiology and Health Promotion, in an article about UW signing an agreement with Shanghai University of Sport. Derek Smith, division director, also was quoted in the article.

Xinhua also spoke with Anthony Ogden, UW’s associate vice provost for global engagement, about UW’s plans to attract more Chinese students to the university.

UW was noted in a MarketWatch opinion piece, titled “A student loan plan that could actually work.” The article reported that the maximum Pell grant of $6,195 covers tuition and fees at only one flagship state university: UW.

The Miami Herald published an Associated Press release announcing that UW is renewing its “The World Needs More Cowboys” marketing campaign for another year.

Sixteen people have been named to the committee that will help select the next UW president, The Laramie Boomerang reported. Among media outlets reporting on the story were The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T), K2 Radio, Big Horn Radio Network and The Houston Chronicle.

The CS-T interviewed UW economist Rob Godby for an article, titled “A timeline of the month since Blackjewel declared bankruptcy.”

The CS-T also interviewed Godby about Cloud Peak Energy’s request to delay the scheduled auction and sales hearing of the Cordero Rojo and Antelope coal mines. The Gillette News Record carried a similar article.

The UW Board of Trustees approved a landscaping plan for Lewis Street that will be incorporated into a pedestrian area of campus, reported The Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

KUNC spoke with Tom Minckley, a UW associate professor of geography, about the UW-led expedition that retraced John Wesley Powell’s exploration of the Green and Colorado rivers. Researchers and artists were among those who commemorated the 150th anniversary of Powell’s expedition this summer. High Plains Public Radio also reported on the expedition.

The Cody Enterprise reported that four EducationUSA advisers from four countries visited UW and Northwest College last week and early this week.

UW graduate student Abigail Hoffman was featured in The Boomerang to discuss her microbes research in the Snowy Range.

The Rock Springs Rocket Miner published UW’s release on the WWAMI Healthcare Careers Summer Camp that took place last month on the UW campus. Forty-three high school students from Wyoming and the surrounding area learned about health care careers and participated in hands-on activities.

UW Acting President Neil Theobald discussed with Wyoming Public Radio his key goals for the next year.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release announcing that UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources is developing plans to focus its Collaborative Solutions Program on helping communities grow their recreation economies. The Haub School will use a $50,000 grant from UW’s Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship to help with the efforts. The Rock Springs Rocket Miner also published the release.

Reporters Melodie Edwards and Tennessee Watson received awards from the Native American Journalists Association, and Wyoming Public Radio News won four awards in the annual National Native Media Awards competition.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle noted that the UW Art Museum will host a reception for the exhibition “Western Explorations: The Wyoming Arts Council Biennial Fellowship Exhibition 2018 and 2019” later this month.

UW’s Cowboy Commitment program, which will offer more student financial aid to Wyoming high school graduates, was featured in The Jackson Hole News and Guide. The program begins in 2020.

The CS-T quoted UW College of Law Professor Michael Duff for a story about the dangers associated with long-distance drives by oil and gas industry workers in Wyoming.

The Laramie Boomerang reported that the UW Board of Trustees approved the appointment of David Jones as dean of the UW College of Health Sciences. Jones, a professor in the Division of Communication Disorders, has led the college for the past two years as interim dean.

Former UW basketball guard Clara Tapia is one of two Mountain West student-athletes in the running for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, reported The Casper Star-Tribune and WyoSports.

Michigan Business Daily ranked UW’s wrestling program No. 14 on the list of the 200 college wrestling programs with the highest grossing revenues.
