UW in the News

June 8, 2020

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW law Professor Michael Duff spoke with Bloomberg Law about a lawsuit against McDonald’s Corp. that will be an early test of whether workers can use a longstanding legal doctrine against public nuisances to force employers to keep them safe from the coronavirus.

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) reported that UW has released a draft plan to restart on-campus educational courses this fall, including measures to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission and a mixture of in-person and online courses. The Laramie Boomerang noted the cost for opening campus this fall. Wind River News Network, K2 Radio and SweetwaterNOW were among media outlets announcing UW’s proposed plan.

UW is ranked among the nation’s top 100 public colleges, as rated by Business First. The annual rankings of 485 colleges are based on a 22-part formula that analyzes the latest data from the National Center for Education Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau.

AZO Life Sciences, goHUNT and Science Daily were among publications reporting on the research work, led by UW Professor Holly Ernest, that evaluated the long-term impact of bighorn sheep translocations, an important management tool used to increase bighorn sheep population numbers in Wyoming.

A UW-led study of great gray owls in a four-state region, showing that range discontinuity could lead to genetic drift and subsequent loss of genetic diversity in the birds, was published by Science Magazine. Ernest was the senior and corresponding author of the team’s research paper. Science Codex also published UW’s release on the study.

Ernest also was senior author on another study that showed the state’s pronghorn have little-to-no genetic differentiation even though their range spans hundreds of miles, multiple mountain ranges and three major interstate highways. The Billings Gazette and the Missoulian published UW’s release on the research.

The CS-T noted the black bear research of UW Assistant Professor Joe Holbrook and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. The research focuses on larger male bears’ eating habits and how they are able to avoid bait traps.

High Plains Journal reported that Cody Gifford, a UW animal science assistant professor, has been selected to the World Food Logistics Organization’s Scientific Advisory Council that focuses on meat products.

Avanti Financial Group, the crypto-focused bank backed by Wall Street veteran and UW graduate Caitlin Long, announced the closure of a $5 million angel round. The funding round was led by the UW Foundation, according to Yahoo! Finance. The funds raised will allow Avanti to comply with all requirements for a bank charter. Industry publications such as Blockchain News, Bitcoins Channel and Crypto News published similar articles.

The Uinta County Herald interviewed UW economist Charles Mason about the gas price discrepancies of individual Wyoming communities noting that the Uinta County prices are much higher. Mason said a community’s gas prices are influenced by prices in nearby communities.

Two UW English graduate students -- Spencer Cooke and Isaih Dale -- received prestigious fellowships to the University of Oklahoma and the University of Notre Dame. The Desert Review published UW’s release.

SweetwaterNOW published UW’s release announcing that 17 Wyoming students, including two from Green River, recently graduated from UW’s medical program, WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho).

Two Fremont County students were among 21 graduates of UW’s Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing, reported Wind River News Network. Students were recently honored during the school’s first-ever virtual convocation.

Laramie Live published UW’s release noting that the Wyoming Technology Business Center, with the main incubator based at UW, has rebranded itself as IMPACT 307, Where Founders and Innovation Thrive.

UW Black 14 football member John Griffin spoke with The CS-T about the death of George Floyd and the similarities of racial injustice 50 years ago that he endured and what is happening today across the nation.

UW’s plan on how student-athletes will be tested for coronavirus was mentioned in a Seattle Times article on how Pac-12 schools will enact safety measures.
