State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) and Laramie Boomerang reported that UW extended its pause of in-person classes until at least Monday so it could gather additional data about the prevalence of COVID-19 infection among the campus community. KGAB Radio also noted the pause.

UW officials are planning to reopen in-person classes and release on-campus students from shelter-in-place orders this week, as the coronavirus’s presence on campus appears to have tempered, reported The CS-T. The Jackson Hole News and Guide published a similar article.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will allow Wyoming regulators to take the lead in regulating underground injection wells used to store carbon dioxide. UW’s School of Energy Resources is already forging ahead with a related program in an upcoming phase at a Gillette facility, The CS-T reported.

Science Daily and Buckrail published UW’s release noting that researchers found that the dynamics of springtime plant growth, specifically whether green-up progresses like a wave or not, explain where deer migration occurs in many ecosystems. Earth.com published a similar article.

Noted Wyoming archaeologist George Frison, founder of UW’s Department of Anthropology, died last week in Laramie, Cowboy State Daily reported. Frison is the only UW faculty member ever elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Northern Wyoming News, Oil City News and Wyoming Public Media also published UW’s release.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed UW geology and geophysics Professor Cliff Riebe about his team’s $5 million grant to research the Earth’s critical zone, the upper layer of Earth.

Bonnie Heidel, the lead botanist of UW’s Wyoming Natural Diversity Database, and colleagues published a paper that identifies 65 plant species that have gone extinct in North America since European settlement. Oil City News and SweetwaterNOW published UW’s release on the research.
