UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Last week, Gov. Mark Gordon announced an additional $500 million in budget cuts, The Casper-Star Tribune reported. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle and Sheridan Media also noted that the proposed supplemental budget includes reductions of approximately 15 percent to UW and community colleges.

The Deseret News, Salt Lake Tribune, Denver Post and CBS 4 in Denver noted how UW’s Black 14 football players teamed up with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to distribute nearly $500,000 worth of food to needy families in the region before Thanksgiving. The church also issued a media release.

Jason Shogren, UW’s Stroock Chair of Natural Resource Conservation and Management, was among experts to discuss a federal reintroduction of wolves to some Western states in a Christian Science Monitor article. The focus was on Colorado becoming the first state to include a reintroduction of wolves on the ballot instead of the federal government calling for reintroduction.

The Mail & Guardian, in Johannesburg, South Africa, noted that UW law Professor Noah Novogrodsky was among legal scholars who worked on an appeal of a Ugandan family whose daughter died during childbirth. The case was overturned, and the family was awarded monetary damages. The judge ordered that all citizens should be entitled to safe childbirth.

John Koprowski, dean of UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, was quoted in Ontario, Canada’s Sarnia Observer about the Rondeau Provincial Park black squirrels that inhabit the White House grounds. The Sault Star, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, published a similar article.

Bloomberg noted that UW halted in-person classes a week earlier than scheduled because of COVID-19 concerns. UW was among colleges mentioned in the article on how universities are keeping students safe during the Thanksgiving break.

UW’s sixth annual UW Giving Day broke new records, with more than double the number of donors and double the number of dollars received. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle and K2 Radio noted that $840,602 in gifts and pledges from 2,409 donors in 48 states and six countries was raised.

Oil City News and The Laramie Boomerang published UW’s release noting that research conducted at the university could help pave the way for a treatment for a neuromuscular degenerative disease that causes heart failure in humans. Former UW Associate Professor Wei Guo conducted the ongoing research during his UW tenure.

The American Pharmacists Association published UW’s release noting that UW School of Pharmacy students volunteered at Laramie’s Downtown Clinic to administer free flu vaccinations to county residents.

Libraries across the state have received grants from UW to create mini-makerspaces, Wyoming News Now reported. UW Innovation Wyrkshop Coordinator Tyler Kerr explained that the grants came from a Wyoming Department of Workforce Services Division of Vocational Rehabilitation fund.

WalletHub interviewed UW Professor Emerita Virginia Vincenti. She offered advice on how to celebrate Thanksgiving on a budget and how to be safe during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Brian Mealor, a UW associate professor of plant sciences and director of the Sheridan Research and Extension Center, was interviewed by WyoFile on how state officials are battling invasive weeds throughout the state.
