    UW in the News

    February 14, 2022

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Bloomberg Law quoted UW College of Law Associate Dean Sam Kalen for an article that focused on the oil and gas industry bracing for the possibility of the Biden administration missing a promised deadline to announce an upcoming oil and gas lease sale. One option may be litigation.

OilPrice.com reported that oil production in Wyoming, North Dakota and Colorado may not return to the pre-pandemic peaks, but it is definitely on the rise as high oil prices make drilling and project economics great again. UW economist Rob Godby was quoted in the article. Investing.com published the same article.

UW researchers found that a single genetic mutation linked to slower chronic wasting disease (CWD) progression has become more common over time, Bowhunter reported. The study indicates that deer with the “slow” mutation were less likely to test positive for CWD.

The Casper Star-Tribune noted that $58 million from the state’s capital construction budget has been earmarked for UW. Legislators begin budget work this week in Cheyenne.

The Laramie Boomerang reported that higher flower prices -- mixed with supply chain shortages -- could mean Valentine’s Day spending might be slowed somewhat this holiday season. UW economist Anne Alexander was interviewed for the article.

UW College of Education student-teacher candidates have begun their 16-week student-teaching experience, with more than 150 student teachers placed in Wyoming, Colorado and Utah schools. Wyo4News published UW’s student-teacher list.

WyoToday Media published UW’s announcement that the Wyoming Center on Aging is offering free online and in-person workshops throughout the state for people with chronic health conditions and their caregivers.

UW Extension educator Jeremiah Vardiman told The Powell Tribune that farmers could expect significant increases in fertilizer this spring, with prices already double from a year ago. The Laramie Boomerang published the original article.

UW will host a job fair for the hospitality and tourism industries early next month. Wyoming News Now published UW’s release noting that the fair is seeking employers looking to staff up for seasonal operations or promote year-round career opportunities for recent graduates.
