UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Utility Dive interviewed Charles Mason, the H.A. “Dave” True Jr. Chair in Petroleum and Natural Gas Economics at UW, for an article noting that the U.S. Department of Energy will spend $6 billion on a program designed to keep nuclear power plants from closing. Mason said the high operating and maintenance costs of running reactors can make them uneconomical in some markets.

The UW Board of Trustees last week voted to lift the mask requirement in most indoor spaces at UW. Cowboy State Daily and WyoFile were among media outlets reporting on the changes that will take place beginning today (Monday). The Laramie Boomerang and Big Horn Radio Network published UW’s release on the board’s action.

MSN reprinted a Roll Call article in which UW economist Anne Alexander was quoted. Alexander said about 50 cryptocurrency firms have relocated to Wyoming to take advantage of the crypto laws. Many of those companies have just incorporated in the state, not moved their actual headquarters.

Camellia Moses Okpodu is the new UW College of Arts and Sciences dean as of last June. She was profiled in a Wyoming Public Radio interview, where she discussed her goals and the reorganization of the college.

Law360 interviewed UW College of Law Professor Michael Duff, a labor law expert, for an article that discussed how attorneys of color are underrepresented on both the union and management sides of the labor law field. The article noted that labor law diversification has improved the last few years.

In a Buffalo Bulletin article republished in The Jackson Hole News & Guide, UW psychology Professor Carolyn Pepper discussed the factors that have led to Wyoming having the highest suicide rate in the nation.

WyoToday Media published UW’s release announcing that Tommy Orange, a Native American writer whose New York Times bestselling debut novel, “There, There,” was nominated for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize, will give a free public reading from his book next month on campus.

UW’s fourth IMPACT 307 incubator will be located on the Cheyenne campus of Laramie County Community College. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle noted that IMPACT 307 focuses on the creation of innovative and scalable businesses.

Registration is now open for the Yellowstone symposium, an event celebrating Yellowstone National Park’s 150th anniversary. The Cody Enterprise published UW’s announcement for the event that is sponsored by UW’s College of Law and the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources in collaboration with Yellowstone National Park. The symposium is scheduled later this spring in Cody.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release announcing that UW’s IMPACT 307 will host “Foundational Topics for Licensing Intellectual Property,” a new “Lunch and Learn” series webinar this week.

UW business Professor Emeritus Sherrill Shaffer spoke with WalletHub for a column that offered professional decision-making advice on debt consolidation loans.

Hits 106 posted UW’s release on its website announcing the university and state community colleges’ collaboration on the opening of the Wyoming Outdoor Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality (WORTH) Initiative. The initiative will offer degree/certification programs that will benefit Wyoming’s second-largest industry, tourism and hospitality.
