UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Kevin Monteith, Wyoming Excellence Chair in the UW Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, was interviewed by The New Yorker for an article titled “The Great American Antler Boom.” In discussing antlers, Monteith said, “They’re like snowflakes. Every one is unique.”

Wyoming News Now interviewed Anastasiia Pereverten, a Ukrainian exchange student at UW, who is advocating for her country. She said people could help Ukraine by talking to local leaders and donating to trustworthy charities to help refugees, civilians and the Ukrainian military. UW zoology and physiology Professor Michael Dillon was among experts interviewed on The BBC’s program “CrowdScience” on the topic “How high can insects fly?”

The Laramie Boomerang published a Wyoming Tribune Eagle article noting that UW unveiled its new Wyoming Outdoor Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality (WORTH) Initiative last week. The initiative is part of Gov. Mark Gordon’s Wyoming Innovation Partnership, a collaborative effort among UW, the state’s community colleges, the Wyoming Business Council and the Department of Workforce Services. In a related Wyoming Tribune Eagle article that focused on Wyoming’s tourism, Dan McCoy, interim director of WORTH, said the tourism sector in the state has grown steadily over many years, and such growth is expected to continue. Travel and Tour World republished the article on its website.

Western Ag Reporter interviewed agricultural economists, including UW’s Chris Bastian, about how the conflict in Ukraine will affect ag-related markets. Bastian says it depends on how long the conflict continues and whether U.S. production will increase to help ease lower supplies in export markets this fall.

UW College of Law Professor George Mocsary was among a team of Second Amendment scholars who wrote a legal brief in a case involving Maryland’s ban on various semiautomatic rifles, according to Reason. Reason is an online independent journalism site focusing on civil liberties, politics, technology, culture, policy and commerce.

The Hill published an op-ed piece from Jason Shogren, the Stroock Chair of Natural Resource Conservation and Management in the UW College of Business, and three colleagues. The article focused on a federal judge’s preliminary injunction against the Biden administration’s use of its interim estimates for the social cost of carbon pollution.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department may authorize a ewe and lamb hunt near Jackson Hole to reduce a bighorn sheep herd. The goal is to prevent a widespread pneumonia die-off. The Jackson Hole News & Guide published a Jackson Hole Daily article noting that UW researchers are collaborating on the herd study.

Wyoming News Now and SweetwaterNOW reported that the governor’s office and the Wyoming Legislature will jointly fund an energy development manager. The position has been created to help Wyoming maximize economic growth of emerging energy projects. The manager will work with several entities, including UW’s School of Energy Resources (SER).

In a roundup of jobs available throughout the nation, WorkingNation reported that UW is starting a ranch management and agricultural leadership program. The article noted that the U.S. gained 678,000 jobs in January, with the greatest growth in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, health care and construction.

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture published an article noting World Wildlife Day. The institute, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, reported that UW researchers are working with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to test elk samples collected at hunter check stations for the presence of the chronic wasting disease prion.

In noting Yellowstone National Park’s 150th anniversary, Buckrail reported that UW’s College of Law and the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources will host a two-day symposium later this spring at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody. Laramie Live published UW’s release announcing that the Nuclear Energy Research Center in UW’s SER is seeking proposals from UW faculty members currently receiving or pursuing sponsored research for nuclear-related projects.
