UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

County 10 published UW’s release noting that revised memoranda of understanding (MOU) between the university and the tribes of the Wind River Indian Reservation will lead to new levels of collaboration for the benefit of Native students and communities and UW. Tribal leaders met with a UW delegation recently for a round of talks that led to the revised MOU. Cowboy State Daily published a related article.

UW employees making less than $150,000 annually would receive base pay raises of $1,400 or $1,900, along with additional increases based on other factors, under a plan to be presented to UW’s Board of Trustees this week. KGAB Radio and Wyoming News Now published UW’s release.

K2 Radio noted that the Wyoming Energy Authority signed an MOU with Battelle Energy Alliance, the operating contractor of Idaho National Laboratory (INL), to collaborate on advanced energy technologies. The MOU listed coordination and engagement between INL and UW as a possible element of cooperation.

Tim Collier, an associate professor in the UW Department of Ecosystem Science and Management, was among scientists petitioning for the release of Aceria angustifoliae, a weed-eating mite, in North America. New Atlas reported the initiative is an attempt to control the growth of Russian olive trees. The small trees crowd out native plants, reduce nesting sites for birds, change soil chemistry and disrupt the ecological balance. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has granted permission for mites to be released within Canada.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed several health experts, including UW’s Christine Porter, the Wyoming Excellence Chair in Community and Public Health, for a segment titled “As COVID-19 maintenance grows more individualistic, the uninsured find themselves in a familiar situation.” The report focused on how there will be differences between health care available to people with insurance and to those without insurance.

Scott Quillinan, senior director of research for UW’s School of Energy Resources, was a guest on “The POWER Podcast.” He discussed work that UW is doing to help the coal industry become more sustainable in the episode titled “Keeping Coal Relevant: University of Wyoming Leads the Way.”

UW, the state’s community colleges and state departments will take part in a six-month, 14-state Next Generation of the Healthcare Workforce Learning Collaborative. Wyo4News and K2 Radio reported that the collaborative project will address health care workforce challenges, with a goal of growing and strengthening the state’s health care workforce.

The Laramie Boomerang reported that a team of six UW researchers and students worked with colleagues at the National University of Ireland Galway to develop a test for the COVID-19 virus that is more accurate and efficient. The Newcastle News Letter Journal published The Boomerang article.

Entomology Today reported that a UW team, led by graduate student Samantha Nobes, found that planting several species of specialty cut flowers in “high tunnel” shelters attracts a wide variety of pollinating insects.

The Women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Conference for Wyoming students returns for an in-person event next week on the UW campus. The Pinedale Roundup and WyoToday Media published UW’s release.

Big Horn Radio Network reported that Cody Gifford, an assistant professor of meat science in the UW College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, will receive funding from the Wyoming Beef Council to investigate how to add “value and palatability” to cuts from the beef round.

UW will confer an honorary doctoral degree on famed mountaineer Joe Kelsey during commencement ceremonies May 14. Bigfoot99 Radio published UW’s release on the announcement.

Wyoming Public Radio featured UW’s esports team -- competitive video game players. E.C. Ogu, president of the UW esports team, said UW players can be nationally competitive with more financial support and help from the university. Some Wyoming community colleges offer scholarships for esports team members.

Markforged recently acquired Teton Simulation Software, an incubator business in IMPACT 307, a UW program. Wyoming News Now published UW’s release on the announcement.

7220 Sports published UW’s release announcing that Scott Chamberlin, a professor in UW’s College of Education, will serve as UW’s next NCAA faculty athletics representative (FAR). The FAR represents UW and its faculty in relationships with the NCAA and the Mountain West Conference.
