UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

CNN, Forbes and High Country News cited the Greater Yellowstone Climate Assessment that was published last year by researchers, including those from UW, in their reporting of flooding that caused the closure of Yellowstone National Park last week. The study showed that the Upper Yellowstone area warmed by about 2 degrees Fahrenheit between 1950 and 2018. The Atlantic, International Business Times and Montana Free Press published the High Country News article.

UW researchers will use a $20 million National Science Foundation grant to help Wyoming communities deal with projected significant and lasting changes in water availability, reported WyoFile.

Wyoming Public Radio noted that the new Wyoming Innovation Center, a facility that aims to research the different uses of coal, recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony. UW’s School of Energy Resources is among those conducting studies at the facility, located in Campbell County. Building Design + Construction published a similar article.

UW President Ed Seidel and Deborah Wince-Smith, president and CEO of the Council on Competitiveness, wrote a column for The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) and The Laramie Boomerang titled “Expanding regional, national innovation begins in Wyoming” ahead of this week’s Mountain West Innovation Summit on campus.

UW will host leaders from across American industry, higher education, national laboratories and government this week to develop concrete policy recommendations aimed at keeping the U.S. at the forefront of innovation and economic competitiveness. Sheridan Media published UW’s announcement, and The CS-T also did an advance story.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported that UW will receive an $800,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) that will support nuclear energy projects. UW is among more than 40 universities to receive such funding.

A vote by employees of a Maryland Apple store to unionize -- a first for the technology giant -- is a significant step in a lengthy process that labor experts say is heavily stacked against workers in favor of their employers. Time published the article that quoted UW law Professor Michael Duff.

Yahoo! News picked up a Wyoming Tribune Eagle article on how there could be a path for crypto campaign contributions in Wyoming. Steve Lupien, director of UW’s Center for Blockchain and Digital Innovation, was quoted in the story.

Politico published comments from UW College of Law Professor George Mocsary for an article titled “Could liability insurance prevent gun violence in California?” Mocsary also was interviewed for a Route Fifty article titled “A Patchwork of State Red Flag Laws is Likely Under the Gun Safety Deal.” Congress is discussing gun safety legislation that could mean a wide range of approaches balancing safety with gun rights.

Eight UW Science Initiative faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students recently collaborated with 22 Snowy Range Academy fifth grade students on field-based research projects in Curt Gowdy State Park. WyoToday Media published UW’s release.

The Boomerang noted that the city of Laramie is working with UW to continue wastewater testing to monitor the prevalence of the COVID-19 virus in the community after the statewide program was canceled in December.

The Sheridan Press published UW’s release noting that UW Extension’s Cent$ible Nutrition Program recently recognized educators for exceptional outreach efforts in 2021 focused on nutrition, physical activity and how to eat better for less. Oil City News published a related article that listed awards that UW Extension members recently received.

UW College of Engineering and Applied Science students are among 23 finalist teams -- representing 23 collegiate institutions spanning four countries -- in the 2023 DOE 20th annual Solar Decathlon Build Challenge. County 10, Sheridan Media and WyoToday Media published UW’s release.

Wyoming Livestock Roundup reported that UW will offer the first Lamb-a-Year program this fall to UW students in support of Wyoming’s sheep industry and the UW Sheep Program.

Three UW students recently received the American Heritage Center Undergraduate Research Award. The Sheridan Press noted that Amelia Gee, of Big Horn, was among the recipients.

The Sheridan Press published a Wyoming News Exchange article that noted a 6-foot-long bronze winged shoe was placed on a stump of petrified wood in front of a Gillette business to commemorate eight UW cross country runners who were killed by a drunk driver outside of Laramie in 2001.
