    UW in the News

    July 11, 2022

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The New York Times quoted UW economist Rob Godby for an article titled “Quitting Oil Income Is Hard, Even for States That Want Climate Action.” The article stated that Wyoming is the most reliant state on fossil fuels, with 59 percent of state and local tax revenue coming from coal, oil and gas.

Yahoo! News posted a Hill article on a WalletHub report that noted Wyoming led the country in total energy costs per state. Godby was quoted in the article.

Godby was among energy and policy experts who offered advice on reducing dependence on traditional energy sources and cutting costs in a WalletHub column. He provided tips for saving money on energy bills; commented on the effectiveness of tax deductions and credits at incentivizing households to be more energy efficient; and discussed the impact on energy production and prices with many employees still working from home.

Capital & Main interviewed UW College of Law Professor Michael Duff for an article that focused on Yellowstone National Park tour guides who were fired after attempting to unionize. Capital & Main is an online news site reporting on economic, environmental and social issues.

John Koprowski, dean of UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, is the recipient of The Wildlife Society’s Aldo Leopold Memorial Award. ZooChat published UW’s release, which noted that Koprowski is the first UW faculty member to receive the highest award given by the 11,000-member organization of professional wildlife scientists.

Big Horn Radio Network featured comments from state and national leaders, including those from UW President Ed Seidel, offering congratulations to former U.S. Sen. Al Simpson who received a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Simpson was among 17 recipients of the award given by President Joe Biden last week.

The Wyoming Community Foundation and the Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center at UW recently published the 2022 Wyoming Counts Kids data book that highlights child and maternal health, according to a Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) article.

The Laramie Boomerang reported that WyoTech recently entered into a partnership with UW to help maintain agricultural equipment for UW’s Laramie Research and Extension Center.

Lusha Tronstad, lead invertebrate zoologist with the Wyoming Natural Diversity Database at UW, was interviewed for a Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) piece focusing on the endangered western glacier stonefly that now can be found in the Beartooth, Absaroka and Wind River ranges.

The CS-T reported that three school districts will take part in a pilot teacher apprenticeship program that is designed to help turn around Wyoming’s teacher shortages. Paraprofessionals and substitute teachers can continue to do paid work while taking classes through UW and the community colleges.

Robert Ramaswamy, acquisitions editor for the University of Wyoming Press (UWyoP), was a guest on “The Academic Life” podcast. UWyoP is seeking proposals for book-length scholarly manuscripts from UW scholars. Player FM listed the podcast on its website.

WPR interviewed UW Assistant Professor Rachael Budowle who is leading a team of researchers studying how nuclear energy affects environmental justice. UW received an $800,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for the project.

UW’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources’ Wyoming Wool Initiative was the focus of a WPR article. Last year, the UW Sheep Program launched the UW Blanket Project, which focused on creating and selling blankets made from wool from the university’s sheep herd. That program is now the Wyoming Wool Initiative, which will include creating and selling socks.

The Sheridan Press noted that a local teacher was among six K-12 Wyoming middle and high school teachers who recently participated in a science-based program offered through UW. The teachers obtained continuing education credits through UW’s Science and Mathematics Teaching Center courses.

Brian Lee, a UW agricultural and applied economics associate research scientist, commented on how Albany and Laramie county farmers are adjusting to rising costs that are cutting into profit margins. Intermountain Farm & Ranch republished the article that originally appeared in The Laramie Boomerang.

The Laramie Boomerang noted that the UW Biodiversity Institute’s annual Summer Moose Day is this week. UW’s volunteer program was listed in a weekly outdoor column.
