    UW in the News

    August 1, 2022

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Fox 28 Spokane posted an article on its website that focused on gross domestic product numbers ahead of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis report. Comments from UW economist Anne Alexander were included. The article also included talk of a recession and how long it might take to recover.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published a Laramie Boomerang article that focused on the recent UW Black 14 Social Justice Summer Institute. Three members of the Black 14, a group of UW football players who were dismissed from the team in 1969, were on the UW campus to share their stories with institute participants. During the institute, participants created an exhibition that was installed in one of the UW American Heritage Center’s galleries. A digital exhibition will be hosted on the center’s website.

The Rocky Mountain capshell, a rare snail species, was recently discovered for the first time in Wyoming by a group of researchers led by Lusha Tronstad, lead invertebrate zoologist with the Wyoming Natural Diversity Database at UW. Oil City News and Cap City News published UW’s release about the discovery.

Tri-State Livestock News quoted Scott Schell, UW Extension entomology specialist, on how landowners can use insecticide now to help reduce grasshoppers for next year.

Friends of the Bridger-Teton, a nonprofit that acts as a partner to the Bridger-Teton National Forest, collaborated with a UW graduate student to undertake a resource and infrastructure inventory of dispersed camping sites in the forest’s northern zone to help identify needs, according to a WyoFile piece. The article focused on developing strategies to manage forest crowds.

Oil City News interviewed Danny Dale, a UW physics and astronomy professor, about Elon Musk’s SpaceX company that is filling Earth’s orbit with its Starlink satellites. The company will use the satellites to provide high-speed internet services to almost every underserved rural area on the planet.

Mike Smith, a Cheyenne attorney and lobbyist, is UW’s new vice president for governmental affairs and community engagement. KGAB Radio published UW’s release.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release noting that the university’s Sheridan Research and Extension Center will host a field day next week focused on soil health, cover crops and grazing on irrigated forages.

Chad Baldwin, UW’s associate vice president for communications and marketing, talked with Sheridan Media about the College of Education’s inaugural cohort of the Wyoming Teacher-Mentor Corps. The program helps create a network of Wyoming educators who can provide expert support for emerging teachers.
