UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

An opinion piece on the Inflation Reduction Act that WyoFile published noted that the national plan gives a major opportunity to energy-producing states, such as Wyoming and West Virginia, to develop projects focusing on development while also targeting climate change issues. The article focused on energy projects, including those led by UW, that will benefit the state and the economy.

UW College of Law student and Northern Arapaho member Alyson White Eagle-SoundingSides is working with UW law Professor Darrell Jackson and UW Art Museum Director Nicole Crawford to bring home from the British Museum a headdress that belonged to her great-great-grandfather, Northern Arapaho leader Chief Yellow Calf. County 10 and KGAB Radio published UW’s release. The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) and Cowboy State Daily published their own interviews with White Eagle-SoundingSides.

The CS-T published UW’s release announcing that Wyoming Natural Diversity Database researchers at UW recently discovered the Rocky Mountain capshell, a rare snail species, in the Snowy Range west of Laramie. The article noted that the snail was once thought to live only in a handful of lakes in Colorado, Montana and Canada.

UW College of Law Professor Ken Chestek was interviewed for a WyoFile article that focused on Ninth District Judge Melissa Owens, who issued a temporary restraining order recently against Wyoming’s abortion ban. Legal experts say this is the first step in what is likely to be a prolonged battle in the courts. Chestek also was interviewed for a National Public Radio (NPR) piece on the same subject.

The CS-T reported that volunteers spotted 16 moose as part of the UW Biodiversity Institute’s Summer Moose Day. Volunteers gather data on Albany County’s moose populations twice each year -- once in the summer and once in the winter.

UW recently hosted students from three states in the inaugural Black 14 Social Justice Summer Institute, which featured three members of the Black 14 team who were dismissed from the UW football team 53 years ago because they wanted to protest racial injustice. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published an article on the possible spread of the COVID-19 virus after the completion of the recent Cheyenne Frontier Days celebration. UW epidemiologist Brant Schumaker, director of the Wyoming-WWAMI Medical Education Program, was interviewed for the article.

Wyoming Public Radio’s Bob Beck, based at UW, interviewed several people, including UW political science Professor Jim King, for an NPR segment focusing on how Liz Cheney’s attempt to get reelected as Wyoming’s member of the U.S. House of Representatives is going. Wyoming Public Radio broadcast a related interview with King, and Newsweek published a similar article.

UW researchers are among scientists suggesting that hay farmers looking to stretch a limited water supply should consider irrigating their second two cuttings at a significant deficit. Intermountain Farm & Ranch published a University of Idaho article that noted that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture Alfalfa Seed and Alfalfa Forage System Program funded the two-year project.

KGAB Radio published UW’s release announcing that Robert Link is the new associate vice president for human resources. Link, who has been the director of human resources at the University of Findlay in Ohio, will begin his UW duties this week.

UW made history as the first team from Wyoming to be selected to participate in NASA’s 2022 Micro-g Neutral Buoyancy Experiment Design Teams engineering design challenge. Laramie Live published UW’s release.

NewsAzi.com published an article noting that support for carbon capture and sequestration is key to a greener and more reliable grid. A new paper on the research was published in Environmental Science & Technology. The paper was written by Haibo Zhai, a UW associate professor; Jeffrey Anderson, a UW research fellow; and two Carnegie Mellon University researchers.

County 10 noted that UW was among entities to help Lander-South Pass City become the latest Wyoming destination designated as a Continental Divide Trail (CDT) Gateway Community. The CDT stretches more than 3,000 miles from the southern border of New Mexico to the northern border of Montana. Towns and cities that are designated as official gateway communities are close to the CDT, friendly to trail users and dedicated to the completion and protection of the trail.

For the 13th consecutive season, the UW men’s golf team has been named an All-Academic Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America, according to K2 Radio.
