    UW in the News

    August 15, 2022

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

A key timing restriction protecting some wintering greater sage grouse from oil and gas development in Wyoming does not align with the imperiled birds’ use of the critical habitat, according to a study by UW ecosystem science and management Professor Jeff Beck. WyoFile reported that the study’s findings will be reviewed by Sage Grouse Implementation Team members.

Wyoming Public Radio noted that UW and Northwest College instructors are collaborating on a pilot project with a goal to direct more rural students to science careers. The funding comes from a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Inclusive Excellence 3 grant. The Wyoming team has partnered with 15 other universities across the country.

UW political science Professor Jim King was interviewed by The Jackson Hole News & Guide for an article on national endorsements for candidates in down-ballot races in Wyoming. King said it is not clear how much weight former President Donald Trump’s voice will have in Wyoming for lower-profile races. The Guardian interviewed King for a related article.

The Washington Times, Wyoming Public Media, Laramie Live, Cowboy State Daily, Oil City News and The Casper Star-Tribune were among media outlets publishing UW’s release noting that Harriet Hageman has a substantial lead over incumbent Liz Cheney heading into the Aug. 16 primary election. UW’s Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center conducted the recent poll. The Switzerland Times, Sputnik International, BNN Bloomberg, Breitbart and UK Time News also mentioned UW’s poll.

Several Laramie elementary and middle school students recently participated in a COWGIRLS in STEM (Computational Outreach for Wyoming Girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) camp that was created by a UW student. Laramie Live published UW’s release.

County 17 reported that the UW School of Energy Resources and Gillette College will host a forum in Gillette Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 on the carbon ore, rare earth and critical mineral project in the Powder River Basin.

Scott Schell, UW Extension entomologist, told Cowboy State Daily that Wyoming was spared from “murder” hornets -- unlike other parts of the U.S. -- because of the extremes of the state’s climate.

The Associated Press featured how UW researchers, led by Fred McLaughlin, director of the Center for Economic Geology Research, are studying whether small spaces in rock deep underground can permanently store vast volumes of greenhouse gas emitted by a coal-fired power plant. The Washington Post republished the article.

UW management and marketing Associate Professor Chase Thiel provided his expertise for an article that focused on how employee monitoring can sometimes do more harm than good. Computerworld cited Thiel’s research paper titled “Stripped of Agency: The Paradoxical Effect of Employee Monitoring on Deviance.”

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed UW student Alyson White Eagle-SoundingSides, who traveled to London to see a sacred headdress that belonged to her great-great-grandfather, Northern Arapaho Chief Yellow Calf. She and others at UW hope they can bring back the headdress from the British Museum to the Wind River Indian Reservation.

The Torrington Telegram published a UW Extension release featuring tips on how to reduce food expenses from Vicki Hayman, a UW Extension nutrition and food safety educator.
