UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

NCAR and UCAR News (National Center for Atmospheric Research/University Corporation for Atmospheric Research) noted that UW and NCAR scientists kept data for new research that showed a volcanic eruption in the South Pacific had dramatically increased water vapor in the stratosphere.

UW is among a group of subcontractors in a U.S. Department of Agriculture $25 million grant awarded to the Colorado Department of Agriculture for several Colorado soil health projects. According to Fruit Growers News, UW researchers will help to quantify and verify climate outcomes across the program and study the soil heath, soil moisture and carbon impacts of new practices.

Cosmos and ScienceDaily published UW’s new research noting that people with extended visuomotor experience with inverted movements -- such as vertical dancers -- can overcome the inversion effect in perceiving biological motion. Qin Zhu, a UW professor of kinesiology and health, was the lead author of the study, and Margaret Wilson, a UW professor of dance, was the second author.

UW Professor Ye Zhang received a $1 million U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) grant to study how forests in the Rocky Mountains of North America recover naturally -- with the help of wetlands -- after disturbances such as drought, insect outbreaks and wildfires. SweetwaterNOW published UW’s release.

Climatewire interviewed UW economist Rob Godby for an article focusing on nuclear energy, specifically on the proposed reactor at the Naughton Power Plant in Kemmerer. The plan is to convert the plant into a sodium-cooled Natrium reactor.

UW political science Professor Jim King was interviewed by The Casper Star-Tribune leading up to next week’s general election. King said that he expects a lower voter turnout than in previous years.

Oil City News noted that UW’s annual Giving Day raised $4,107,408 from 6,293 donors.

UW geology and geophysics Professor John Kaszuba was among researchers who assisted with a study on turning carbon dioxide into solid minerals underground. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) researchers led the study. Highways Today published a PNNL release on the study.

Small Business Exchange published a U.S. Small Business Administration release noting that UW’s Wyoming Small Business Development Center Network is among 44 entities sharing in more than $5.4 million through the Federal and State Technology (FAST) Partnership Program. FAST provides small businesses and startups, particularly those in underserved communities, with specialized training, mentoring and technical assistance for research and development.

Steve Paisley, director of UW’s Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center (SAREC) in Lingle, was interviewed by Big Horn Radio Network about the roles he has played at SAREC. He also discussed challenges that Wyoming cattle ranchers and producers face.

Bigfoot 99 Radio in Saratoga noted that UW Department of Anthropology scientists assisted Carbon County officials in the search for evidence after Wisconsin hunters found partial human remains south of Rawlins.

Michelle DiPasquale, UW’s violence prevention coordinator, was a guest speaker for the virtual Take Back the Night global event last week. Hits 106 published UW’s media announcement.

Laramie Live and The Laramie Boomerang published UW’s release noting that the Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium will have a full schedule of programs in November. The facility was closed for almost three months due to electrical-related damage from a power outage and then from flooding after a rainstorm in August.

For the first time, UW is among 30 colleges and universities selected to participate in Phase 1 of DOE’s 2023 Collegiate Wind Competition. WyoToday Media published UW’s release that noted 10 UW students will participate in the competition.

Sheridan Media published UW’s media release announcing that the 2022 Governor’s Business Forum will take place Nov. 15-17 at UW’s Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center. Additionally, the Wyoming Heritage Foundation will host a free pre-forum Mental Wellness in the Workplace Symposium Nov. 15. Sheridan Media also published UW’s release noting that the Department of Animal Science reported record enrollment this fall in its introductory meat, wool and livestock judging courses.

A Wind River Startup Challenge kickoff party took place Oct. 29 at the Frank B. Wise Building in Fort Washakie. Attendees learned how to receive support to jump-start a business. County 10 published the article, which noted that UW is among the program’s sponsors.
