Step 9: Travel to Laramie

Education Abroad

You must plan to arrive in Laramie before the mandatory International Student Orientation sessions begin.

  • Please see dates for Orientation in Step 10
  • For Fall 2018, please plan to arrive no later than 22 August
  • For Spring 2019, please plan to arrive on 22 or 23 January only.  Do NOT arrive on 21 January.  It is a national holiday, and the university will be closed.

You will fly to the Denver International Airport (DIA) in Denver, Colorado.

U.S. border agents are required to verify that every international student arriving in the U.S. has a valid student visa.  Please expect and plan for delays when going through U.S. customs and border control.  This is especially important to consider when purchasing your airline tickets.  You will be required to go through customs and border patrol at the airport in which you first enter the U.S.  If you have a connecting flight from that airport, please plan sufficient time so that you do not miss your next flight.

To reach Laramie from Denver, there are two options:

  • Fly directly to Brees Field Airport, Laramie (LAR), via Sky West Airlines

A Study Abroad staff member will meet you at the airport and deliver you to the UW campus free of charge

  • Take the Green Ride Shuttle Service from the Denver International Airport to the UW Washakie Center

Travel time is 2.5-3 hours

Make reservations online at the Green Ride web site

You must plan your travel so that you arrive in Laramie between the hours of 8:00 am (0800) and 9:00 pm (2100).  Laramie is in a remote location.  Please be aware that in order to arrive in Laramie during acceptable hours, you may need to plan for two days of travel.

If you cannot arrive in Laramie between these hours, you will need to stay the night at a hotel in Denver.  Laramie is a small town with a very small airport.  There are no hotels near the Laramie Airport, and it is not possible to sleep in the airport.  There is also no public transportation or taxi service from the Laramie Airport.  It is 8.5 km (5.3 miles) from the Laramie Airport to the University, so walking is not a good option - especially in winter.  If you use the Green Ride Shuttle from Denver, you can be taken to a hotel in Laramie for a small fee.

If you will be living in a UW apartment, it is not possible ot check in to your apartment any later than 8:00 pm (20:00).  If you plan to arrive in Laramie later than 7:00 pm (19:00), you must plan to stay in a hotel that night.

You will need to notify the Education Abroad Office of your travel itinerary, so that we can arrange to have someone meet you when you arrive in Laramie.
