How to Add Hyperlinks

There are four types of hyperlinks that you can create using the CMS:

  • Links to e-mail
  • Links to documents
  • Links to an internal page
  • Links to an external page

To begin building any link, first highlight the text you want linked in the WYSIWYG editor, then click the hyperlink button in the toolbar at the top of the editor (it looks like chain link).

Linking to an Internal Page or Document

  • Select the Internal option in the pop-up window.Picture displaying how to inset an internal link
  • Click on the Ssearch option and navigate to the page or uploaded file that you want the text linked to.
  • Enter a brief description of what you're linking to in the Title field. This text will be seen when a cursor hovers over the link or when an individual is using a screen reader program.
  • In the target drop down menu, select either Same Window, if you want the page or document you're linking to to replace your page when the link is clicked, or New Window, if you want the page or document you're linking to to load in a new window.
  • Select Insert, submit your page, and test the link in the page viewer.

Linking to an External Page

  • Select the External option in the pop-up window.
  • Copy and paste or type the url of the page you're linking to in the Link field.
  • Enter a brief description of the page you're linking to in the Title field. This text will be seen when a cursor hovers over the link or when an individual is using a screen reader program.
  • In the target drop down menu select either the Same Window, if you want the page you're linking to to replace your page when the link is clicked, or New Window, if you want the page that you're linking to to load in a new window.
  • Select Insert, submit your page, and test the link in the page viewer.

Linking to an E-Mail

  • Select the External option in the pop-up window.
  • Type mailto:the_email_you_want@uwyo.edu in the Link field.
  • Type send e-mail to the_email_you_want@uwyo.edu in the Title field. This text will be seen when a cursor hovers over the link or when an individual is using a screen reader program.
  • In the target drop down menu selectNew Window. This will cause the e-mail to launch in a new window, instead of replacing your page, when the link is clicked.
  • Select Insert, submit your page, and test the link in the page viewer.
