January 31, 2013 -- Six University of Wyoming faculty members have been chosen to conduct research on the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC) in Cheyenne this winter. Read more
January 25, 2013 -- New transmission and generation infrastructure, relative to power generated by Wyoming's vaunted wind, would help diversify the state's economy with more high-paying jobs -- both during the construction and operation phases -- while providing economically priced renewable power to California, according to a recent study conducted by the University of Wyoming's Wind Energy Research Center. In 2003, Dimitri Mavriplis was working at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., using computers to help perfect aircraft designs for the nation’s aeronautical research agency.
Then he received an offer from the University of Wyoming that he simply couldn’t pass up. “The Mechanical Engineering Department was looking to start a program in computational fluids, and that’s exactly what I wanted to do,” Mavriplis says. Read more
Oct. 31, 2011 -- LARAMIE — A supercomputer destined for Cheyenne could someday help wind farm developers figure out the best places to put their turbines in Wyoming.
The National Center for Atmospheric Research computer is bound for a facility now under construction on the outskirts of the capital city.
While the supercomputer will crunch data related to atmospheric studies, University of Wyoming researchers plan to also use the computer to gain better understanding of Wyoming’s winds.
“I think the supercomputer is going to have a huge impact,” said Jonathan Naughton, director of the University of Wyoming Wind Energy Research Center, speaking before the Wyoming Infrastructure Authority board last week at its meeting in Laramie. Read more
SER Faculty Jay Sitaraman and UW Mechanical Engineering faculty Dimitri Mavriplis received an award of $1.25 million as a part of a multi-university rotorcraft center. Many challenges for rotorcraft have links to the simulation of wind turbines. WERC sees an ability to leverage this funding to improve their wind turbine simulation capability.
Nov. 17, 2008 -- A University of Wyoming poll shows that Wyoming residents favor a variety of solutions to meet the United States' energy needs, including near-unanimous support for the development and use of renewable energy. Read more
May 9, 2008 -- The University of Wyoming Board of Trustees today (Friday) approved the first phase of a planning process for a building that will house a large, closed-loop wind tunnel within a center focused on wind energy research. Read more
Sept. 8, 2007 -- BP America, the nation's largest producer of oil and gas, has donated a gift of $5 million to the University of Wyoming that will support programs within the UW School of Energy Resources (SER). Read More
