Overview: Coal produced in the Powder Ridge Basin is used to produce electricity in coal-fired power plants.  Fly ash, bottom ash, and boiler slag are formed when coal is burned.  The byproducts of coal-fired power generation are used for many common household items.  By creating an awareness of the consumer products made from fly ash, bottom ash, and boiler slag, the teacher will introduce the students to the dependence consumers have on coal, a non-renewable resource.

Overview: The idea of this lesson is to have students participate in small group and whole group activities which center on Wyoming cola mining.  Locations of coal mines will be identified, as well as how coal is transported out of the state.  The new 12' x 12' map of Wyoming will be used to identify rail locations and mines.  The use of map legends, symbols, and scale of distance will be an important part of the lesson.

Overview: The purpose of this lesson will be to create a five day simulation for students during which they are assigned the task of deciding the location of a new coal-fired power plant in Wyoming.  They will be supplied facts including (but not limited to) transportation, waterways, resources, climate types, population centers, and ecologically sensitive areas to evaluate and to arrive at a decision.

Overview: The purpose of this document is to provide basic instructions for creating a "Zoom In Inquiry."  A Zoom In Inquiry is an activity that is created in a presentation program, usually PowerPoint, and allows for the teacher to guide the students in uncovering a primary source image in small pieces.  The Zoom In Inquiry lends itself to introducing new lessons in an imaginative fashion and easily lends itself to differentiation.
