Women's Center

What is feminism?

Feminism is about challenging the division of labor in the world that puts men in charge of the public sphere and keeps women subordinate. It's about people, both women AND men demanding full rights for women in EVERY sphere.

Why do we need a Women's Center?

Women's Centers serve as a focal point of women's issues and concerns. Since the early 1970s, women's centers have been established throughout the country--most frequently on college campuses by women students--in response to historical inequities experienced by women. They provide women with the resources and support they need to realize their potential as individuals and members of society. The Women's Center can help make sure gender inequities, disparities between women and men, and other issues are addressed, reduced, and eliminated.

The UW Women's Center was very active during the late 1970s through the early 1990s. We are now revitalizing the center and looking forward to playing an important role on campus.

Why isn't there a men's center?

Few schools have men's centers because it's generally recognized that men already have full access to educational and employment opportunities as required by law. A large body of research exists which clearly documents gender-based discrimination against women. Traditionally, American and world history have focused primarily on the achievements and contributions of men and have largely excluded those of women. However, men as allies and supporters of women, may participate in any events that we coordinate.
