Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory

The mission of the Department of Veterinary Sciences and Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory is to provide accessible, timely, accountable, and accurate diagnostic services, animal disease research, & education to veterinarians, students, others interested in animal health, and the people of Wyoming.

The Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory is a fully accredited laboratory committed to the maintenance of a quality assurance program that ensures that all procedures and documentation are in compliance with the quality standards of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD).

Veterinary Sciences invites appliations for a Master's program in Parasitology. The Department of Veterinary Sciences at the University of Wyoming is seeking a highly motivated Master's student interested in parasitic diseases of livestock. The project aims at the improvement of targeted control of coccidial infections in livestock. Specifically, this project is focused on the development of a test system to screen for drug susceptibility and resistence in bovine intestinal coccidia of the genus Eimeria. The project comprises laboratory work (e.g. fecal flotation and parasite identification, parasite culturing in vitro, quantitative PCR) as well as parasite passaging in vivo, sample collection and interviews with livestock producers. The project will make use of diagnostic samples submitted to the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory (WSVL) but will also require independent on-site sampling in Wyoming and experimental animal care at WSVL.

Preferred candidates will have a keen interest in applied research in protozoal in vivo and in vitro models. Strong problem-solving skills, good communication skills and the ability to stay focused and work autonomously are expected.

The position comprises a graduate assistantship, medical insurance, and tuition waiver (up to 9 credit hours).

Applicant must have a bachelor's degree in a related field (veterinary science, biology, microbiology, etc.) and have an interest in livestock disease. Applicant needs to be highly motivated and have the ability to work independently after initial training, and the ability to interact well with other students, co-workers and faculty. The position requires interest in in vitro techniques (cell culture, molecular biology), experimental animal work, and statistics. Preferred skills include working knowledge of MS Office and basic laboratory bench top skills.

Trichomoniasis Submission Guidelines, effective January 1, 2017.  Please note that fresh Trichomoniasis samples received on Saturday (only USPS is delivered to WSVL on Saturday) are not incubated at the lab on that day.  It's best practice to not ship fresh Trichomoniasis samples to be received on Saturday.
