2021

WySCI board member featured in Runner's World

WySCI board member and co-founder Karen Vaughan and collaborators are creating a film about running 130 miles across Colorado and Utah to build appreciation for soil science. WySCI board members part of team receiving Grand Challenges seed funding

WySCI director Bethann Garramon Merkle (PI) and board members Brandon Gellis, Kristen Landreville, and Karen Vaughan are part of a 17-member team that received seed funding along with 4 other teams. The WySCI-affiliated project, IMPACT – Innovative Methods to develop Adaptive Capacity through Transdisciplinarity – aims to enhance UW’s research impacts by expanding UW’s transdisciplinary capacity. Details.

WySCI director and co-founder Bethann Garramon Merkle was interviewed about scicomm and being more creative with sharing science. Details.

SciComm student publishes op-ed in Scientific American

PhD candidate Sam Case, a student in the Tarwater Lab, Department of Zoology & Physiology, and the Program in Ecology & Evolution (PiEE), recently published an op-ed he developed in the spring 2021 course Science of Science Communication. Case's op-ed explores a complex aspect of his research on birds invasive to Hawai'i: can invasive species replace extinct native birds' seed distribution functions and help native plants persist? WySCI director co-authors scicomm research paper

WySCI director and co-founder Bethann Garramon Merkle co-authored an article about mixed-methods approaches to understanding public preferences for land management in the U.K. The team used collages and surveys to understand public preferences about ag land management. Details.

SciComm student publishes children's book

PhD candidate Michelle Mason, a student in the Department of Astronomy and Physics, recently published a children's book now available in print and ebook formats. Phoebe the Photon Explores the Universe introduces young readers to astronomy fundamentals. From the Big Bang to quasars to our own Milky Way Galaxy, Phoebe shows you the wonderful astronomical objects that exist throughout space. Phoebe the Photon Explores the Universe is an educational astronomy picture book for young readers interested in science. This book offers short rhyming stanzas for new readers as well as more in-depth explanations of scientific concepts for more advanced readers. Find Phoebe the Photon online.


2020

WySCI director appointed Associate Editor for Royal Canadian Society journal FACETS

WySCI's director and co-founder, Bethann Garramon Merkle, received an invited appointment as an Associate Editor/Subject Editor in Integrative Sciences, Science Communication, and Zoology for the peer-reviewed journal FACETSFACETS is published by the Canadian Science Publishing and is the flagship journal of the Academy of Science, Royal Society of Canada.


2019

WySCI director appointed Associate Editor for ACSESS journal Natural Sciences Education

WySCI's director and co-founder, Bethann Garramon Merkle, received an invited appointment as an Associate Editor for the peer-reviewed journal Natural Sciences Education. NSE is published by the Alliance of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science Societies and American Society of Agronomy.

 


2018

WySCI board member receives Biodiversity in the Arts award

WySCI board member and co-founder Karen Vaughan and collaborator receive funding for their multimedia art project SOIL: The rainbow beneath. Funding is from the UW Biodiversity Institute.

 


2017

WySCI is launched!

The UW Science Communication Initiative is founded by a fourteen-member consortium of departments, units, and programs at the University of Wyoming.

WySCI board member receives funding for scicomm course development

WySCI board member and co-founder Karen Vaughan receives funding from the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium to develop an integrative science communication course.
