The Discursive Mathematics Protocol
DMP Project
ABOUT THE DMP
The Discursive Mathematics Protocol is an instructional protocol designed to provide students, particularly culturally and linguistically diverse students, with opportunities to simultaneously engage in mathematical reasoning and learn the language of mathematics. The DMP builds on Pólya’s iconic problem-solving heuristic by integrating research-based “language practices” and essential teaching practices.
Professional development
The DMP project offers schools/teachers an opportunity to participate in ongoing professional development sessions and implement problem-solving lessons to support diverse students in mathematics. Teachers learn about the DMP and engage in planning, implementing, and reflecting on their own experiences.
Research component
The DMP project has a research component with the purpose of advancing the protocol and its implementation. The research on the DMP provides insights about how to simultaneously support students to learn the mathematical language while fostering their mathematical reasoning.
