Accessing Collections and Conducting Research

The American Heritage Center's collections are open to everyone—UW faculty, students, staff, visiting scholars, and members of the public are all welcome to access our collections. Read on for an overview on how to use the AHC archives!

If you're planning on conducting research at the AHC, we encourage you to complete our researcher registration form in advance and either email it to Reference Services or bring it on site. This form may also be completed while visiting the AHC.

Getting Started

All research at the AHC begins by identifying collections that you want to access. Get started with our collections overview, where you'll find resources for discovering and navigating the AHC's 5000+ collections. You can also browse our collections by subject area to discover a sampling of the collections we hold as they relate to various research topics. A growing portion of AHC holdings is available though our Digital Collections on Luna. This online portal includes various collection materials such as photographs, letters, journals, audio recordings and other textual and audio-visual material.

Accessing materials

Once you've identified the collection materials you wish to study, make an appointment in the Reading Room by emailing ahcref@uwyo.edu or calling (307) 766-3756. The Reading Room, open from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and located on the fourth floor of the AHC, is where you'll access collection materials. Once you've made an appointment, we'll go deep into the archives and retrieve the requested materials, which will be ready upon your arrival. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are heavily encouraged to minimize wait time while material is called up from storage. Please also note that audio, film, and some photographic formats require specialized viewing procedures. Please contact Reference Services with as much advance notice as possible if you're interested in viewing these kinds of media.

Reproducing Materials

Self-service photocopying/scanning machines are available in the Reading Room for convenient reproduction of historical materials. The AHC also offers high quality digital reproductions of collection material upon request, including photographic prints and audio/visual files. Please note that use of duplicated materials from AHC collections are subject to copyright restrictions, and are attended by certain costs and policies. More information is available on the Digitization Services page.

Remote Research and Discovery

Remote Research and Discovery allows you to study AHC collection material from anywhere in the world. Sessions are held over Microsoft Teams, where a dedicated research assistant will help you analyze documents, examine photographs, and skim through collections as you search for the materials you need. Once you find what you need, your research assistant will work with you to order and share scans of collection materials. Contact Reference Services to see if your project qualifies for an RRAD session. RRAD is a paid service, with billing processed after each session.
