Honorary Cowboy

Associated Students of the University of Wyoming

Description of Honorary Cowboy

The Honorary Cowboy Act began in 2012 to honor a young cowboy combating neuroblastoma. This program has continued to develop and we now award at least one student each spring for recognition at a football game of their choice during the following fall semester. To be eligible for this honor, the recipient must be a K-12 student in the state of Wyoming. They must also be an individual that emulates an upbeat attitude that represents the “Cowboy Up” spirit of the UW student population. Recipients must have faced or continue to face a formidable life condition or circumstance that requires a “Cowboy Up” spirit that leads to an ultimate triumph. Applications for the Honorary Cowboy will be posted on the ASUW website each March.

2017 Honorary Cowboy!

Who has a “Cowboy Up” spirit?

Ra'el Ireland Trosper, a 16 year old, junior at Wyoming Indian High School was the awarded the Honorary Cowboy Award for 2017. Her parents are Leslie Trosper Antelope, and the late Allison "Ty" Trosper, Sr. Ra'el is the Vice President of the Student Council at her high school. She participates in Cross Country, Wrestling, and Track. She is a member of the Traditional Club, and dances traditional, fancy dance, jingle dance, and hoop dance. She is a member of the Northern Arapaho tribe, and the Eastern Shoshone tribe. She always strives to get good grades and often volunteers to help her school and community. She likes to help her family at their Sundance ceremonies and sweat ceremonies. She is a member of the Latter Day Saints. She would like to attend the University of Wyoming after graduation.

Ra’el traveled to Laramie last Saturday to attend the snowy Border War game at the University of Wyoming. This game certainly represented the “Cowboy Up” spirit, with the Cowboys fighting against a snowstorm and scoring in the 4th quarter to capture a 16-13 victory against the CSU Rams and keep the Bronze Boot for another year. She and her family enjoyed breakfast with members of the ASUW staff and a campus tour before heading back home Sunday morning.

A big congratulations to Ra'el!
